Goldfield Road, south of Geraldton, isn't called Goldfield Road because of all the gold in them thar hills! It was once Canada's country music Mecca, with performers coming from as far away as Jellicoe and Longlac!

This CD harkens back to a simpler time, when life in Northern Ontario was cold, a little warmer, and then cold again! But the music was hot! Old timers will never forget the Grand Cold Opry located south of what is now Hwy 11 and Goldfield Rd.

Nashville songwriters would travel here to mine the work of the North's greatest singers and songwriters. And what a list it was.

They did not leave Long Lac to play music, they left Long Lac to leave! I was through there around 1981 but didn't know it until told later on. Well, maybe not quite like that but it was pretty unremarkable. The highlight of the trip was meeting Shania Twain though she was not going by that name then.

Longlac used to have several hotels and a casino. They had a 208 store mall and convention centre running - until the earthquake that is. Part of the Canadian Shield shifted, and part of it slid into a giant hole left when the earth moved. Several thousand acres of forest were swallowed up by the giant sinkhole that was exposed after the quake. Damn gold mines!

The Grand Cold Opry completely disappeared into that hole along with several thousand moose, bears and the entire Ontario bison herd. It was the worst natural disaster in the region since people south of Hwy 7 (mostly from Toronto) discovered there was more land in Ontario north of the highway to ruin. They started coming north to hunt and fish and things haven't been the same since!

I blame Bill Davis for that. And drugs.
