Anyone with info on the strength of the siamese mauser action. Navy Arms sold rifles in .45-70 built on the siamese mauser action. Thanks

I've had mine since 1977, although it was barreled by Federal Arms and stocked by myself with [bleep] wood. It accepts max loads from the Hornady manual for Ruger No.1s without protest - I never have seen any indications of 'excess pressure'. That's 300s at 2250 fps and 350s at 2100fps. Plenty of punch on both ends.

Nimrod,thanks for the reply. Mine was stocked by an excellent gunsmith in turnertown,texas. Pretty nice piece of walnut. I'm really wanting to restock with a synthetic or laminate. Would feel better with it if i move to SE Alaska. It has a pretty robust contoured barrel and i haven't been able to find anything close to a semi-"drop-in." Any ideas anybody??

Try Boyd. They make stocks for most. I bought mine from ElkRidge but would re-think that decision.

I have a Siamese Mauser action rifle with a 26" "don't want" barrel.My load for this one is 52gr 3031 w/400gr jsp.A real bear to bench! Will group 3 shots touching at 75yds.Why 3 shots? Thats all I can stand the recoil from! Estimate 2000fps or so and it will drop anything I point it at.

I have one of my own and it digest nearly anything you put into it. These actions will normally take anything a 98 will. I shot some 571 grain lead paper-patched out of mine at 1745 fps. Talk about a kick in the a^%$ <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Use caution and load it like any other bolt gun.

You have all the strength you need. I shoot Sharps rifles and make paper patch bullets. For my heavy hunting loads I use Hodgdon Varget and AA 2495 and I can get 1800 fps in my 45-90 and 500 grain bullets with pressures in the 30,000 psi range according to the Hodgdon folks. Your 98 Mauser will take that in stride with no sweat. With your 45-70 and 450 grain bullets, 52 grains of Varget will max out the case. AA2495 will go with around 50 grains with slightly heavier bullets You will get all the velocity you want and it will do a good job for you in Alaska. A 400 grain Barnes X should be a great bullet for about anything you want to use it for. If strictly for bear protection, go with a 500. Enjoy your rifle, you have a good one. When I lived there, if I was in Brownie country, I carried my 416 Rem. If only black bears were visitors, I carried a 44 Mag with 300 grain heavy loaded cast bullets. Your Mauser will work in both cases.
