Local group is shooting steel matches with 22lr rifle and looks like fun. Most are running 10/22 clones/customs or AR’s. I acknowledge the 10/22 is a foolproof option, but have no interest. Any thought on 22lr AR’s that are reliable and allow for some customization? For example, from reading it appears the ColtUmarex gets panned. The M&P pretty good but plastic and not accepting of many changes. And compass lake kit apparently well thought of, and do have a spare upper/lower here, though clearly an expensive route and do not know how reliable they are (meaning, for $1000-1500 finished that sucker better run like butter).

Experiences?

I have a CLE 22LR upper. I call it an AR22. It is accurate and is customizable to the degree that an AR is (it will take whatever AR parts your heart desires). It is accurate at 50 yards where I shoot it the most. And it is based on the Army's M261 conversion kit, so it will be supportable with parts into the future. Frank White at CLE manufacturers some of of the parts like firing pins and magazines.

I attached the only pic I have of a target shot with my CLE Upper through the irons at 50 yards. Not a great example of what it's capable of, but a funny pic I sent to my friends of a missed wind call at our notoriously gusty range. For the most part, the CLE allowed me to squirt rounds center during the short windows of "my condition". I obviously missed a buildup that turned into a big gust.

I vote for the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22. Tacticool22 makes an adapter nut that allows the installation of any AR free float fore end. A good metal fore end changes the feel of the rifle entirely, you forget it's a piece of plastic. While some of the factory triggers are fairly good, an after market drop in from CMC also makes a big difference. I recommend CMC because of my experience with them. Other drop ins don't have enough oomph to be 100% reliable in a rimfire but CMC does. I know that Velocity offers a "steel case ammo" trigger that is supposed to function in a 22 but have not tried one personally.
