Low serial numbers have always appealed to me and with everything else being equal, condition and caliber, that low number adds value. However, I can't imagine that the value added on this gun, comes anywhere near the price asked. If money is no object and you want a single didit gun, here it is. The chance might not come along again. I sure don't want it that bad!

These are the type of rifles to seek if one is building a collection for monetary gain. The high dollar rifles are where the money will be in the future IMO. Money aside this a really cool rifle! .

The price isn’t that bad considering what it is. That is pocket change for some people. I would have guessed 20,000.

You don't see that every day. Very interesting.

My guess is the asking price will be met.

Is it true that the first 2000 model 70s were only in 30 Govt?

It may be in good shape but is not 100% original either... someone has drilled the back of the receiver for a scope mount.

No mention of the rear receiver ring being non-factory d&t, that would discourage a lot of serious collectors....

Very interesting gun, first day of production. Even if it was in poor condition it would be desirable.

A few years back I paid $2,700 - delivered - for a 1949 .257 Roberts in excellent original condition.

It was my first Model 70. My thought was that I might lose $500 if I turned around and sold it, but that would be an okay risk in order to own and shoot this Model 70 for awhile. To date, I have gotten at least $500 of enjoyment out of this absolutely perfect gun. Also. to put things in comparison, I once spent almost $500 of a dinner for 10 at a restaurant, and all I left with was indigestion.

Moreover, I do not know how to price No. 9 with a drilled rear bridge -- it could easily go for only half the current offer price if I went to sell it. The $7,500 offer price is probably just an invitation to deal. The seller joined Gun International just 5 days ago and did not indicate in the description that the rear bridge was drilled outside the factory

Were any of the early Mod 70’s drilled and tapped for scope mounts from the factory?

Poconojack: Sure looks to me like the rear bridge of that single digit serial numbered Model 70 has been drilled and tapped and a plug screw installed!
Reference - enlarged photo #6 of 15 (and also look closely at photo #9 of 15!)!
This and the fact that virtually every angle of photo is shown except one that would absolutely and clearly show the status of that rear bridge gives me much pause.
I had a chance many years ago to buy a single digit pre-64 Model 70 - sure wish I had taken advantage of that opportunity (30GOV'T'06 also!) now!

I’m sure as scopes became popular some went back. Had a 482xxx 70 FWT that had the bolt jeweled at the factory when a family friend who worked there took it back for a stock replacement. “Not factory” according to the experts.

If this one was drilled correctly, who can say for sure?

Rcokdoc: They all were capable of having scope mounts added!
The scope mounts used the front bridge of the receiver (which is factory drilled and tapped) and the rear side bridge of the receiver (which is factory drilled and tapped for the dual purpose of accommodating a receiver sight and a side mounted scope base).
I forget which company made those type scope bases.
I seen it done though.
Long live the Riflemans Rifle!

Stith mounts, they used the rear sight dovetail and the two factory d&t holes on the left side of the receiver for mounting....

Per Rule's reference, the first run of 100 M 70's were all 30-06.

My personal low 30's two-digit, first or second day production 30-06 is definitely not drilled on the rear bridge!

SN#9... cool gun, picking "nits" or not!!!
