I'm at the WWC show in Riverton, Wy. this weekend. There's a real clean 1927-28 vintage 99K with a long ramp front sight not integral to the barrel. It also has a long hood on the sight. The sight is an ordinary looking post. The rifle does not appear to be reblued. If the sight was added later the ramp would have to have been ground off and the barrel reblued. Is there a possibility that this is factory? I'll get photos when I get back to the show. David

If the new sight is larger than the one ground off, I could see not needing any reblue. Or any chance the barrel was cut?

Fireball, The barrel looked like 24" but I'll check it. I think the base of the integral sight is wider than the add on and it would show where it had been ground off. Will post pics in an hour or two. David

You would need a letter to prove it was factory and in that time period I don't think it would have been logged. I'd pass as a modified none original.

The raised ramp started a little before the 300,000 range. Is it the later medium weight barrel or the thinner earlier version?

Rick, I probably will pass. Attached are photos.

It appears to be original blue. I think if the original sight base had been ground off it would show. there is a tiny scratch on the left side near the sight.

It's a medium weight barrel. Serial # and barrel address put it at 1927 production. It could have had the transition medium weight barrel sight. My 1926 era G has the transition sight. David

Interesting. Another campfire member sent me a photo of the same sight he saw on a 99K at a show in MA in Nov. 2016. Did the same rifle cross the country in a year and a half?

I am quite certain that those King sights mount over the factory ramp and are pinned to the original ramp. No need to modify the rifle other than removing the original blade from the dovetail and drilling the ramp for the pins.

See Stroebel's book. Pages 14 & 15 in my edition.

Saw a 22 HiPower with a similar, but different front sight ramp at the Syracuse Show this past April. Attached with two pins through what I’m pretty sure was the original integral front sight ramp, but there was no way to be certain, so I passed. It was a very high front sight ramp that I believe was installed to work with a tang sight. Have a pic if anyone would be kind enough to post. please pm.

Interesting that King would build a reflector sight with a hood. Seems like one kinda cancels out the other.

I've seen King reflectors on and off 99s and they are kind of cool, but I like Redfield's Sourdough better.

The guy was being evasive about the trade I offered him so I probably won't get it. If I do I'll try removing the front sight and see what's under it. It has the two pins.
They don't show up well in the photos. David

The King reflectors I've seen fit over the factory front sight base - though those I've observed are a different shape than the sight in these pictures but that's because they were on the later front sight base. I suspect the sight base on your rifle is the split post type and not the raised dovetail ramp. It's a cool looking sight.

Ah, but the true purpose of the sight hood is to protect the sight from getting dinged or the bead getting knocked off when not in use. I've seen people trying to sight through a hood when there was hardly any room inside there to see the bead because they didn't know enough to remove the hood first. I have hoods in my sight box that I don't have a clue as to what rifles they came off of long ago- what does that tell you about my opinion of sight hoods?! Obviously with this King sight the hood is meant to be disposed of before using the front sight.

True, and that's how I look at 1903/03A3 sight hoods. Never really having owned a commercial rifle set up with one I guess I hadn't thought of it that way. Its a cool looking sight and, to me, a definite plus to that 99.

I'd be curious as to the seller's asking price if you don't mind.
