Gentlemen, having just sorted out my first flintlock, I am wondering how waterproof these type of traditional powder horns are? It can be very wet where I hunt, like the Pacific Northwest

IMHO, nothing is waterproof. But I’ve hunted is some pretty driving rainstorms over the years. One I remember it was coming down so hard visibility was down to about 15-20 ft. Powder has remained dry. Horn for the the most part is impervious to moisture, hence there use for powder. But again the weak links in my opinion would be with the installation of the base plug and its material, and however the pouring spout or type of pouring spout is installed. I find a simple friction fitted wooden plug ( like a fiddle peg for example) in the pouring spout hole has been more than adequate for the decades Ive used a horn.

This has worked well for me in the past. I would not go as far as to submerge one of my full horns in water. But as I stated Ive weathered some serious rains with no issues. Im sure an expert will be along shortly to contradict all I have written, and thats fine too.

(Geez,,,,, that last line was a bit of a joke!)

Thanks, I was worried about how watertight the spout would be. Apart from rain, when hunting over here there are a lot of crossings of creeks and rivers to consider

I have held horn and pouch over my head crossing some pretty wide creeks here. About waist deep. With rifle in other hand. Ya just gotta be careful! Good luck!!! Hope you have a successful hunting season!

Started another horn yesterday. When presentable, I’ll post a photo. Putting together an entire Kaywoodie produced rig again of rifle, bag, horn and accouterments as time permits. Rifle was finished last year. Got a big pile of accoutrements made. Bag and horn will complete the set.

This is my “therapy”.

Curiosity. Do you collect, give away, or sell them? I might be interested in one for my muzzleloader, if so. (It's nothing as nice as yours of course, just a modern inline. )

Mostly I make the stuff for myself. I like to have a bag and horn for each of my firelocks. That way when I wish to go afield I can simple grab what ever gun and its personal bag o’ goodies and I’m off.

What has happened that causes me to have to redo all this is in the past 40 or so years I have either lost, misplaced, loaned, or given away stuff and now I’m finally back in a position where I can start replacing my kit.

Making stuff isnt hard. And its fun! As well as I stated, my therapy! Try it! Start small and ask questions! You will be surpried what you can do!!

Hmmm...might have to add to my skillset.

Got the horn about 98% done today. Need to fabricate a stopper and a strap. Then start on pouch.
