Did Savage make bullets for these? Trying to find the correct bullets for an 1899A in .38-55 made about 1908-09. Thanks in advance.

are you asking about bullets or cartridges?
Les Volmer makes and sells correct bullets, as for cartridge cases i think starline produced a run.

...and if you are asking about loaded ammo try Graf and Sons. The ammo is 38-55 Winchester or .38-55 WCF. You can Google the history of the round.

If you are looking for a box of Savage ammo from that period to display with your rifle.. yes, believe they made it. And it's rare, and fairly pricey.

Yes, they made it for a few years. I have one full box and an empty one just sold on line for about $400. God luck finding more

Let's see now. $400 for an empty Savage ammo box, or $400 for a shooter 99, or $400 for a Vegas escort? The choices in this man's world certainly are mind boggling!

Yes, for display purposes a period correct full box of Savage ammo to go with the rifle is what I seek. Suppose a different maker but also period correct full box would also do. Thank you for the replies everyone.

What "grade" of escort would that be?

Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

The stock only has a screw hole for the forearm and two holes for holding on the butt plate (one on top and one on the bottom). Were they meant to be carried without a sling?

Yes. Those old guys would smirk at we moderns who spend 7 hours out of 8 in the woods with rifles slung over their shoulders.

I wonder how they killed anything without camo. Was a masking scent popular then?

Cool old picture Gene. Compare this to some of the ones that have been posted in the past showed hunters wearing neckties and jackets. The pictured hunters are likely in the west?

Yeah, masking scent alright! Can you imagine what it smelled like in amongst that bunch of unwashed guys in the days before there was deodorant, while wearing the same clothes for days or weeks on end?

Most likely slept in them too. I think working men in the East dressed like that all the time. It was the executives, store clerks, preachers etc. who wore suits and ties all the time.
