This is a short book - 190 pages- describing Lt. Hugh Barr Miller's experience in the Solomon Islands in WW2. He was a gunnery officer aboard the U.S.S. Strong, a destroyer, that was torpedoed and sank. Some survivors were picked up by a nearby destroyer and others were missed. He was among those missed and many or most of those missed were injured and subsequently died. With several others he made it to a very small island that had no fresh water or food available and then he and those still alive made it to a somewhat larger island that did have some fresh water and coconuts available. And plenty of enemy patrols. This is the story of his survival and the intelligence information he was able to provide that was important in the Solomon campaign. He was put in for a Medal of Honor by Admiral Halsey but the book notes that at that time if you survived the Navy didn't request Medals of Honor. That was changed later.
An interesting read if you have any interest in personal stories of WW2.

For a minute there I thought you were describing the story of a Nick Nolte movie that was called "Farewell to the King". As I recall it, it was a good watch.
