Can't stand Merkel, can't stand Trudeau, and have no doubt that we're letting other countries take advantage of us. But.....I also know that trade deals are often very complicated, and it's not just a simple thing to drop out of deals without having a plan in place. Trump better know what he's doing.......time will tell.

I call BS on all of this. I run a trade deficit with my grocery store I’m not complaining.

Taxing the American people to remedy trade deficits is stupid. That’s all that tariffs are.

Lousy example. You also run a massive trade surplus with your employer.

Trump knows what he's doing. He's a businessman, and a successful one at that.

Tariffs break the will of the other party when done right, and open up further trade with them on a more even keel.

He's putting America first, and the world is waking up to the fact that he will continue to do so. If they don't trade with us more evenly, we have more than enough ability and capacity to bring production back home, which benefits us even more. The other countries have literally no leverage to use against us, except (in their small minds) the "court of world opinion."

If Trump were correct about the trade deficit, then he would have a right to complain. The truth, though, is far from that. The fact is that, in regards to Canada-US trade, the US runs a considerable surplus overall, and a surplus in steel, automobiles, and agricultural products - just the things he's complaining about. I have a hunch that he knows this, but is doing it to strengthen his bargaining position, garner domestic support, and put himself in a position of strength for his meeting with the N Korean leader.

Don't get me wrong, I'm as right-wing as they come and agree with most of Trump's policies. But in this trade area, he's acting more like a Democrat, as protectionism is one of their usual tactics.

But I heard him say that the perfect tariff and trade would be zero. A goal he is trying to negotiate.
Also, if we are exporting more into Canada than Canada is exporting to us, then the question that begs an answer is why? Does Canada not make any steel, automobiles, ect. Is that why they are hitting our farmers and companies with such a high tariff? Are they trying to make up the difference in product, or shall we say lack of products, by over tariffing the US's?

Actually heard a some expert/economic genius on MSNBC (maybe CNN) claim that the bigger our trade deficit the better it is for our economy.

Someone who worked for obama, no doubt.

It is only a tax...if the American people choose to buy.

If they choose not to buy...the importers have other options to recoop their losses. One of them is too build the product in the States, and hire American works to build it.

Nope it was a good one and so is yours.

Both point to the fact that trade imbalances don’t necessarily mean adjustments are necessary on one side or another. More information is necessary before making the decision.... like terms of existing trade agreements.

Tariffs are stupid unless used as leverage for concessions which is how Trump has used them in the past I hope he does it again.

I'm guessing they didn't continue with an in depth answer as to why this would be the case.
