Here is a link to the wildfire information: https://www.facebook.com/416Fire/ Lets hope they get it under control before homes and lives are lost. God help and protect the firefighters. HH

The unit 74 fire in SW Colorado has burned about 36,000 acres now & is about 63 contained. Unit 74 is a rectangle shaped unit running N&S. The fire is burning in the upper 50% of the unit. I do a lot of hunting in the lower half of unit 74. Extremely hot here & dry drought like conditions. in SW Colorado. We should get some summer rains in July & Aug. but if not I would forget about hunting in this area of Colorado, at least this coming season. This past winter was the driest winter I have ever seen. Didn't plow snow one time.Never had that happen before. I live at 7630' elevation.

Hesp: Thank you for the update. Here is a link on Facebook for the most recent info on the 416 fire.

https://www.facebook.com/416Fire/ It is only 37 % contained as of 6/28/18.

There also was a new wildfire... the Spring fire in s/e Colorado. Last evening 6/27/18, it was 1200 acres and local communities were being evacuated. It is east of Fort Garland, Colorado. That fire is now burning 4000 acres. Here is a link to that fire, it is in Costillla County,

https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/springfire?source=feed_text

There is a video of this wildfire in that link. This is Unit 83. HH

A Facebook link to Colorado Wildfires.... 4 new fires started recently. Sugarloaf Fire, 300 acres burning in Grand County William Forks area, Spring Fire in Costilla County 3500 to 4000 acres, and Golf Course Fire by Grand lake in Grand County... forcing hundreds to evacuate. Weston Pass fire approx. 15 acres burning.

https://www.facebook.com/COWildfireInfo/

You folks who have Colorado Non Residents tags especially should pay attention to these fires, it might affect your hunt area in a negative way for a time. As new growth re-generates, it will improve your hunt area, drawing game animals, but if scorched with a very hot fire it will take many years to recover. HH

2002 was the most recent severe drought that affected the whole state, but this is more severe than that one. I'm hearing 1977 for the southwest part of the state but haven't seen any data to that effect

The SW corner of Colorado has had droughts in past History.I have lived thru low snow years in the past . They come every now & then. I live at an elevation of 7630 ' about 15 miles W of Durnago. I have to plow snow every winter multiple times . In a low snow year like 70% of normal I will have to plow at least three times. This past winter I never plowed once. I received three snow falls of 2",2" & then 3". It all melted off in a matter of 1 to two days. Has been an dusty dry spring.. I have native weeds/vegetation that has died & is dying from the lack of moisture. This is the dry side. From my place going west in a straight line 25 to 30 miles is the desert. It is the four corners where Colorado,Utah,Nevada & New Mexico meet. That is pure desert country. Many people think of this area having an abundance of water because of the high mountains. Not so. this is a dry area . Some years may have heavy snow which can give the illusions of abundant moisture. Super low humidity. Come here & hike around & you will understand.. Hopefully we will get our salvation of normal monsoon rains , Due any time. If they don't come , well......

Lot of beetle kill in CO just waiting for a spark and a bit of wind, just a matter of time.

New one reported yesterday afternoon in the Conejos County, Hot Creek, Capulin area.
Hope they got it got it knocked down quickly.
The monsoon season can not start too soon.
Besides all of the LONG term effects from all these fires, there will be a lot of people that have planned a once in a lifetime hunt that will have a unit with little huntable land, or a lot of permit holders JAMMED in to very little area

The Spring Creek wildfire is now the third largest wildfire in Colorado history. 94,093 acres burned. The wildfire seems almost unstoppable. Louis B you are exactly right on your predictions of the 2018 hunt season for many.

Please Lord... let it rain ! HH

Spring Creek wildfire received almost 1 " of rain helping firefighters. Rt 160 to open again. Residents of Forbes Park get to view their homes and cabins to see if they survived the wildfire. Over 100,000 acres burned. Approx 35% containment on a whole, but only 19% containment on the South side of Rt 160. The North side of Rt 160 has the most difficult portion of fire fighting due to terrain Please read the article in the above link. HH

Well it looks like the monsoon rains have now broken the back of the fires here. Been raining every day for days . Looking at the burned area ( upper section of unit 74 ) SW Colorado you can already see new green growth taking place. For the next several years this burned area should be a great spot to hunt. May be great by the time the season opens in Oct.. Don't discount it. My son owns a sizeable piece of land in western Montana & had a fire burn a fair amount of it last year.. No big trees just underbrush & smallish trees. Lots of new growth over the winter & spring.
He tells me that now a fair amount of deer , elk & even a couple moose have moved into the area. Keep an eye on these burned areas for future hunts. They are honey holes.

You can't get access to South Fork or any of the roads/trail to Byers Wilderness. I think they close rd by Fraser hwy 40.

Well our rain here in SW Colorado has stopped. Every thing is drying out fast. I'm afraid to even go out & mow bush on my place. . Been warned a blade could strike a rock , cause a spark & start a fire. Recommended by forest service , no shooting for fear of starting a fire. Stay inside & drink coffee.

I live in unit 741 SW Colorado a an elevation of 7630'. Every winter I have to plow snow multiple times to get out. In a light snow year I will plow about 3 times. This last winter I never had to plow once.Got three small snows of about 2 to 3"each. Melted off quickly. Another strange situation I see is every spring & I mean every spring I have to drive off wood peckers. They try & peck holes in the eves of the house. I hang string with orange surveyors tape to keep them away. This year not one wood pecker . Also have a fair amount of Magpies fly around here. You guessed it no Magpies.Deer numbers way down on my place & neighbors lands also. Don't mean to be so negative just stating what I see.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

GMUG to Lift All Fire Restrictions

Delta, Colorado, July 26, 2018 – The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests will transition out of all current fire restrictions effective at 12:01 p.m. on Friday, July 27. GMUG Fire Managers based their decision on specific conditions such as fuel moisture measurements in vegetation, predicted weather and the amount of current fire activity on the forest. Using the best available science, recent measurements and predictive models have shown a marked improvement in these conditions leading to a significant decrease in wildfire risk.

Although fire restrictions have been lifted, fire managers would like to remind visitors and users of the GMUG to continue to be attentive of their actions and surroundings especially in areas with dry vegetation or dead trees by practicing smart wildfire prevention behavior including: never leaving a campfire unattended, using established campfire rings, picking safe and proper campfire sites and ensuring that their fires are completely out and cool to the touch by using the drown, stir and feel methods.

Federal and county public lands surrounding the GMUG may remain under fire restrictions, please consult with the appropriate land managers before engaging in any activities that may violate these restrictions. For more fire-related information on Colorado’s Western Slope please visit: http://www.WestSlopeFireInfo.com/

For more information on prescribed burns, wildfires and fire restrictions on National Forest System lands please call our Fire Information line at 970-874-6602 or visit our website: http://bit.ly/GMUGFireRestrictions

I hope that it survived the fire.

The 416 Wildfire is 100% containment now ! The link above will show a 9 min video, or put you on the San Juan NF page on FB to view that video. Fire is not completely out, still smoldering in places, but 100 % contained they feel. So thankful to all the efforts of the local, state, and Federal firefighters. Thank you heroes ! HH

I've never called in a contained fire that was out... it just means its in our control for the time being and we think it can't get away from us barring bad weather issue....

When its out, we call it in as the fire is out and we are clear of the scene.

2 totally different things and can be hours and or days or months apart

We camped on the Grand Mesa the last two nights. It is drier than heck and the whole area is covered with thick smoke from the new fire on the Uncompahgre Plateau. We need a bunch of rain but i don’t think we are going to get it. ChrisAU, it is way too early to celebrate.

100% containment just means the perimeters that have been established are fire free and no more new expansion. However you can have pockets burning in the interior til it either rains, snows or goes out on its own.

Can you believe this fire is still burning. Having to deal with the smoke every day. No rain in site. I about 30 miles from the fire in a straight line. Those living closer have to be having a tougher time dealing with the smoke.

More wildfires burning in Colorado, see the above link The Plateau Fire is now 4,850 acres burned and it is burning north of Dolores. See the map on the above link. A few small fires have begun on the old Missionary Ridge fire area and firefighters are on it. I did not know this, but the DSNG RR has a helicopter flying the train route, and reported these smaller fires.

There were 2 wildfires burning in the White River NF last week, the Cache Fire and the Cabin Fire, the FB link for info.

By clicking the incident you can get more detailed information. For all those with elk & deer tags for 2018 fall season please take notice. I was on West Spanish Peak today to get a workout and evaluate the extent of the Spring fire.
I had to turn back at 13,000 ft due to weather - which turned out to be a false alarm.
I have a muzzleloader tag there and am trying to evaluate if there will be a shift in elk movement patterns.

The reddish on the right is burned and extends to hwy 160 and further.
[Linked Image]

My dogs got in the best pic I had that shows the difference between the burned and unburned.

I am sorry this thread has turned into a muti purpose wildfire page of all the fires burning in Colo. I was hoping to be helpful to folks hunting Colo in Units where the fires may be burning or have burned

But I also love other areas of the West and the area surrounding Glacier NP is a favorite, and also hold some great hunting area as the Bob Marshall Wilderness area referred to as the " Bob" There are fires burning there also as shown on the map in the link and in Glacier NP the Howe Ridge fire 11,519 acres burned and still burning and only 10% contained.

https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/6135/46753/

Although Fire is necessary to maintain heathy forest... it saddens me to see this fire in such a beautiful area. If you click the + -
symbols, and use your mouse... you can see all the fires burning in the western states. A extremely bad summer for wildfires. HH

If you live in the Durango area... you might want to come to this event for residents of the " 416 Fire Open House Fire Talks" on Thur Sept 13 at the La Plata Fairgrounds 5:00-8:00 MDT

https://www.facebook.com/events/283207832276907/

There two other events scheduled, On Sept 14 a speaker led tour of vegetation regrowth on the 416 Fire and Missionary Ridge burn scars. by very qualified speakers. Please read the web link for additional information on the Open House Talk series and the second event.

I believe this will be an eye opener for local folks, hunters, hikers and wildlife lovers of the Durango area. HH

The Wife and I went up fall turkey hunting on the Uncompahgre yesterday. The Divide Road is now open all the way. In the area from The Uranium Road to Windy Point all of the west side trails are still closed. We saw very little smoke and no actively burning fires. A large wind event could change that. Atkinson Mesa and Campbell Point look like they got crispy around the edges. The tongue got burned over the top and down into Soiuth Fork of Mesa Creek. The Weimer Cow Camp survived but the fire got within 100 yards. Most of the fire appears to have been down low in the PJ. I think in a couple of years we will wish it had burned a little bit more.

For those looking at unit 74 in SW Colorado. The fire there was confined to the northern part of the unit.. The higher elevations of the La PLata mountains at the southern end of unit 74 got snow last night. Thunderstorms fore cast for today & tomorrow. Means snow again.Noticeably cooler weather.

Got a heavy rain over the southern end of unit 74 yesterday.. .Light snow on the highest elevations. The storm was so dense It completely obscured the La Plata mountains from my view for an hour or so. No rain forecast for the next seven days , but that means nothing. The weather folks are wrong as much as they are right. Rain/ snow can & has happened when no storms were forecast. If you want the true weather forecast for this area you have to wait & see.

I drove by the Silver Creek fire on Sunday (9-23-18) and the USFS and local sheriff has most of the roads going into GMU15 from the north and east sides blocked. (I was driving along US40). If that area doesn't get some serious rain or snow before 1st season, I don't see it being open for hunting.

Update on the Silver Creek Fire n/w of Kremmling and the Ryan Fire on Oct 1 2018. Use your ctrl key and the + key to enlarge the print so you can read it and see the links in blue for more information on the bottom left of the report. HH

I was married in Kremmling 1973. Worked and lived in the area. Hate to hear of this fire.
