Good question. I would say because their computers were hacked, specifically the anti-ship missile tech including launch capabilities. My guess is they were scrambling to get the USS Essex to launch and evade.
Next time you have a choice, buy American and don't send any more overseas than we already do!

One of my older brothers was 12 years (enlisted) in the AF - mostly in Minuteman program.
One month, he sent us a clipping that he had made "airman of the month" with no explanation in the clipping, or from him.
Years later he told me the story- they were doing a simulation launch one day and at 3 seconds and counting, he looked over at the board and everything was green.
He did a flying launch himself across the board, hitting every switch he could in passsing, preventing an actual launch.
If true, there had to have been multiple failures in the equipment/ safeguards/procedure, I would think. To err is human.....
And mechanicals/electricals have been known to bleep up a time or two...
I will ask the Nephew tonight when he and the family drive over for a few days vacation. He lives on Whidbey, is a retired Navy guy. In fact his Vap shop is right next to the back gate to the base, he makes a lot of $$ off the Navy guys with the habit and keeps up on the "scuttlebutt".
