Ya Jim, he should get his food at the store, not kill poor animals.

Yup. No animals were harmed in the making of this plastic wrapped chicken.

Send the youngins to another room. My mother held the chicken by the feet, placed a short iron bar across the neck, foot on either end and pulled up. Then let them flop around until still. I love fried chicken!

Negative on the CC. We are done with those filthy freaks of nature.

these are Freedom Rangers. They take just a little longer to grow, but actually stand and move around - kinda like a real chicken.
The crosses only get off their bellies at the food can to go to the water can and flop down again.

I put necks through the pair o'nails on the stump there and stretch them a little and chop. I have a tub I toss them under to restrict the floppage. Sometimes I let them run around for my sick amusement! smile

Out with the old, in with the new.

I see dumplins in your future! laugh

I'm pretty happy with my Gold sexlink hens.

They are out of the coop from daylight till dark, scratching and schidtting on everything!

Lotsa eggs.

Have t had dumplings since I lived at home. 🙁

Some roasted whole, often cut up and grilled. I have one thawed for tomorrow that I may roast in the grill.

They will grow up to be this.

We use this on a lot of foods. It's cheap at the IGA store, but would be easy to mix.

Then birds are a little over two weeks old now. We got them moved out of the tub in the garage to the pen outside. They are about full-feathered with little down left.

They also have only about 7 weeks left. It must suck to be a chicken.

ironbender,

Thanks for the hint about a different meat bird. Our first time with eatin' birds, have had layers in the past. Got set up with chicks at the local farm co-op store, owner there said get Cornish Cross for meat. NEVER AGAIN!! Big fat ugly stinkin' pigbirds. Can't hardly get back up the 4" into the coop at night. The remaining 3 will likely die tomorrow. They're way too big now, a month more than needed as I've been dealing with other stuff. At one a few weeks back, tasty enough (tastes like ..........chicken grin )

The big fat ugly birds. Same age as the Red, Maran, and Aruacana:

Now I'm going to have to ask the feed store to get some of those Rangers if I decide to go the chick route next year. We may just let a hen hatch a brood for our eating use, it'll be a mixed bag cross as we have a rooster of unknown breed, Aruacanas, Marans, and Reds for hens. Only 12 weeks old and haven't started laying yet, but hopefully soon.

Oh, I hang mine by the feet for killin'. Kind of a hokey video, but it shows how I take the heads off:

PS I love the cleaver. Reminds me I need to find another. All our moves over the years ours has disappeared.

The CC are disgusting freaks of nature. Tasty, but nasty to raise. We've had mortality from heart problems that seems like congestive heart failure. Upon butchering birds that were lethargic, the heart was like a spoonful of pudding. Others have broken hips just existing.

Happy to have 'real' chickens.

3 dead white birds this past Sunday. The livers were huge, thought I was butchering a small turkey. No feathers left on the underside from rubbing on the ground, wing tips beat up for the same reason.

The one bird I put on the bbq was pretty tasty tho. Going to gift the two others to a neighbor who has brought me crappie for dinner and another friend who gave us a nice big jar of honey from their hives. The dang ugly things will have served a good purpose at least.

When the wife likes them................they are!

Them dang legs had to be nearly 3/4 pound each. Breasts were too big for me to eat a whole one nowadays. 10 -15 years ago...no problem. I might have gone for a full half bird just for myself.

Matter of fact, it's about my dinner time, I think I'll go get me some.

Everyone enjoy the evening.
