First one is a herters, 50 lb @28”. Second is a bear grizzly 65 lb @ 28”. Both are pretty solid bows....

Those look good JM! Your bow guy turned them out fast. Moles be damned now with you flinging aluminum missiles at them. Pictures please! 😎

Depending on the price, the bear is a nice pickup. You will enjoy trad archery if you stick with it.

They look to be in great shape! From what I can see the Bear looks like a Grayling, MI made bow. I've never come across a Grizzly with that heavy of draw weight.

Picked em up both for $200. Just strung the bear at work here, she’s pretty stout!!.... grin

I still shoot my brackenbury the best of all the stick bows, but I've shot some bear bows very well. Herters I"ve never found or had the pleasure to mess with.

I have a Damon Howatt Hunter from the early 70's I hunted back in the day. It would be fun to get it out and see if I can still hit anything.

Nice score(s)! Hard to find ones that nice that aren't twisted and with good glass. I sold my Bear TD about five years ago when things got bad on the domestic front and I needed cash.

I dipped my toe back in last year with a 45# Samick TD, mostly just for the backyard. Don't know if I'll ever be good enough to hunt with one again, but I already have a lifetime supply of arrows, and heavier limbs are only about $75. I made some flu-flus by spiraling some pick-up turkey feathers around the shaft in front of the fletching. Squirrels beware! (They might lose their grip on the tree laughing at me)

That Herter bow has to be older than some on here, didn't they go out of business in the 60's? Cheers NC

Not that long ago. I think Cabelas bought the dregs and the name, which had considerable value. Don't think I ever bought anything from them, but they were a real powerhouse in the market once; even sold guns made for them, mostly overseas. Still see some folks using their loading presses from time to time.

Dunno, looks pretty damn old, great shape though. I was thinkin 70's....

Using a set of their dies in 30-06. Don't know if I could load more accurate ammo with a different set of dies as these are the only 30-06 dies I have ever owned.

I really like the laminate in the grip of that Herters.

Yup. Those old bows often had beautiful exotic woods in the handles. Guess the customs still do. Even my cheapo Samick is pretty handsome.

Haven't shot a recurve in near 40 years now. Had several back in the day. That's all there was when I started. Had a Bear Cub first, then a Grizzly, a Kodiak Magnum and a Shakespeare Sierra. Was a pretty good shot with em at one time. Well, good enough to keep them all in the vital area of a deer out to 30 yards anyway.

The grizzly is perhaps the most comfortable grip I have ever shot.

The Herters looks stunning.

You can get the twist out of most old bows.
I've done dozens.
Some were pretty horrible and came out fine.

Had a badly twisted Grizzly, 38# in what looked like tiger maple.
Fixed it and a bud's GF shoots it now.

Other two were 45 and 50#. One IIRC was 56" not 58".
None were Supergrizzlies.
None had a laminated riser either.

The grip was OK, and they shot decent.........but all 3 had noise. Turns out it was limb resonance.
Sims/Vibracheck dampeners solved it.
Didn't care for the change in looks though.

Like to find a Groves Spitfire Magnum with no BH cutout.
Passed on a Flame Hunter recently.........wood was kinda bland.
Some are rather striking.

I really like the Black Widow standard wood grip.
However.........their old metal HS risers...........feel fantastic to me.
My Hoyt Dorado was OK w the factory high grip............which really felt like a medium.
Never did try an Ergo grip on it.

Had a Tradtech P2 and a Samic Phantom. I deepened the sight window to get them better centershot and thinned, deepened the grip throats and slimmed grip sides down too.
Made them very close to BW standard.

Really changed the feel of them (for the better).

One nice thing about a fat riser grip..........a Dremel can fix it.
On the P2.............I got string bit on the bounce.

NEVER had a recurve do that.

Turns out there was a bit of a flat on the back of the riser, where hand went and it was at wrong angle.
Slight slope to opp and no more bounce bite.

I don't wear an armguard unless wearing long sleeves.

FWIW I see folks w old bows buying conventional replacement strings.
Look like the ones made for tear drop compounds.
Think the loop/serving was to make the bows noisy.

Better to go flemish.

Think the Bearpaw ones from 3R are abut 15 bucks. Pretty decent.

Have had him make several.

One was orange/tan/black and went on an 80's era DH 2800 (orangish riser).
Looked great on that rig.

String silencers.........I like the looks and performance of woolywhispers.
