I just picked this up in a trade. I'm sorry the pictures are bad but it was about too hot to take pictures today. I've always wanted one of these. It's sort of a dream gun for me.

12 gauge? Looks beautiful. I'd drop it on a barbed wire fence the first time out to get that behind me I think.

From the size of the chambers, looks like a 12 from way back here. I'd also guess it is a nice carry.

Yes Sir, 12ga. It's got 3" chambers and fixed chokes, IC,M and 28" barrels. I don't have a way to accurately weigh it but I would say it is just under 7 lbs which is just about right for me. Light enough to carry, but heavy enough to shoot. It is very sweet.

I've owned a Merkel model 8 for a few years. It is very close to this gun. A while after I got the Merkel,I picked up a Savage at a gun shop, and it felt like a 2X4 with a brick tied to the end, compared to the Merkel,at least to me.

Thanks guys. Some folks in the shotgun world would say the Merkel doesn't swing as well as an English SXS, or one of the top Spanish models which are said to be the equal of the best Birmingham guns. I find the Merkel to fit me personally just as well as any best quality SXS I've ever fondled in one of the Gun rooms. The other thing that has always impressed me is that the Merkel manages to be a lively gun and still lock up like a bank vault,a much stronger action than some of the highest end SXS guns on the market. I've never seen one that didn't seem nearly as tight as it was when new,and my model 8 must be well over 40 years old.

Great SxS. How do you shoot it?

I won't really test it until the weather cools a bit. I shoot a model 8 as well as I have even shot any shotgun. This one has a little different stock, but basically the same gun.I hope I will be able to shoot it just as well as the 8.

Nice! My Merkel 1620 is probably my favorite shotgun. I use the 16 gauge barrels for bird hunting and the 20’s for games.

The 1620 may be the most practical Merkel ever made.

Two guys on my sporting clays team shoot Merkels of various models, poorly. The guns are solidly made and handle well but do not fit my buddies well and they refuse to change anything as "it will lessen the value" of the guns. As they intend to keep them forever that makes little sense to me as the purpose of firing a shotgun is to hit what you are shooting at.

That is my suggestion- if this is not intended as an investment and will remain a safe queen, get it fitted to you. Shooting 50% on fair to middlin' difficulty courses is a waste of money to me and the percentages do not increase in the field. Pride of ownership is nice but having that plus being able to use the tool well is better in my estimation.

Exactly what I intend. I shot a few skeet yesterday, just at home. Not a perfect test, but enough to know it handles very much like my model 8 which I shoot as well as anything I've ever owned, and better than most..
