Anyone else skip maginum CF rifles? Am I missing anything?

Bored waiting for big game season to open :-)

I love my magnums, but really they aren't needed for hunting north America.

Quite the opposite: I recently discovered how to do brakes without any additional blast or noise. I am suddenly scheming how to make them all magnums! Lower recoil and high velocity combined with modern bullet design and higher BCs and reticles with multiple aiming points is a really good thing.

I like my MAGS too.
I agree they aren’t needed but Higher Vel. means Flatter trajectory.

I plan to enjoy mine a long time.

I avoided magnums on principal, thinking they had too much bark for their bite. Then I was surfing the classifieds here, and found a .300 WM that seemed to be going too cheap. I figured I could play with it briefly, then sell it at no worse than a wash. Turns out, it carries well, fits me well, shoots very well, and the stock handles the recoil magnificently for me. I took a Mountain Goat with it last fall, and it won’t be leaving the safe anytime soon.

In fact, I’m currently working with a .308 Win that’s far snappier on my shoulder than the .300 WM is. With a sample of only 1, I’d not dare say that .300 WM’s are pussycats to shoot; only that this one is.

My advice is to never say never.

Only magnums on hand at the moment are .300 and .375 H&H's. Zero "need" for either chambering in KY. But, fun to play with. Can hand load up or down as desired. However, per the OP's original post, the (non-magnum) .270 Win is still the leader for last man standing as the herd continues to winnow down...

Only have two. A .375H&H, because I thought I should have one, and a 6.5 Rem mag, because it looks cool (700 Classic with 26" stainless Douglas barrel) and the short fat belted case looks cool with a 140 Berger seated to a 3.1" OAL. Stacks them one on top of the other, too.

I've owned a bunch of magnums but recently got rid of a few and opted for a 280 Ackley Improved for this years elk hunt.

The 300 WSM may be the next to go.

How do you do such a thing?

A 243 is kinda like a magnum...being overbore and all.

And always figured I’d get a 45-70 someday. Kind of magnum-ish.

I lived for 55 years without a magnum and at no time for those years did I ever feel under-gunned for these Louisiana (and 1 TX) whitetails. But when I walked into my favorite LGS and saw that Hawkeye in a 264 Win Mag, I had to have her. The rifle was love at 1st sight, but I had been in love with the 264 Mag since I was a child reading all the stories in Outdoor Life and other mags on the chambering. Every author mentioned how fast the barrel would be burned out, but I didn't care. I've always wanted one and the Hawkeye and the 264 was a match made in heaven. But, as much as I love that rifle, I can't see me ever buying another magnum.

And there are guys like me, who have a couple of magnums.. and like my 300 Wins, they get loaded to duplicate either the 30/30 or 308.....using them at 250 yds and under on blacktails at woods ranges...

when I load them up for elk, that get put on steroids, with H 1000 equal to 300 Weatherby loads...

I don't see the point in magnums unless they're at least .33 caliber.

I've only owned one, a 270WSM. Just no need for them, as I don't hunt anything bigger than whitetails. I put in for a Kentucky elk tag every year, and if I ever draw one, my 270 or 7X57 will do just fine.

I own 2 but that will most likely be it for me. I've learned that using good bullets at moderate speeds is more than enough to get the job done

I’ve had a few but they never stuck around long. My max range 100 yd shots just don’t call for one. I would like a .338 WM some day for no other reason than because.

Don't need mags ,but I've got 300 H&H and 375 H&H. Because I wanted them. 375 has never been in the field, but causes me to dream of far away places. 300 has taken several Mule Deer and is actually pleasant to shoot. My friends call it the
30 06 Long Rifle. When I was young and tough I lugged a 338 Win around after deer and elk, nice round, it destroyed less meat than the 270 Win. Gone now, too heavy for and old guy.

I shipped my last magnum some five or six years ago. It had not been used in the previous ten years. I do not miss the belted cases. My heavy medium is a 9.3x62, and I have no real need for it, considering that a heavy loaded '06 will stop most anything on this continent.

My biggest "big gun" now is a 338-06 Ackley....210's at 2800, more than adequate for any future plans......
