Both oat hay, and second cutting alfalfa. This must be the most hay on this farm ever. It got delayed with a big rain last week.

Hay barley, yesterday.

[Linked Image]

Certainly nothing to brag about, maybe 1 ton/acre.

I am a little worried about nitrates as we never watered it.

On a positive note I think I have the 'failure to fully retract' problem finally figured out.

Used baler that we bought a couple years ago(5k on it now). Touchy sonuvabitch in regards to cutting and starting wrap.

wabi,

that was an interesting article. Never knew livestock got "brown blood disease" like fish do (makes sense thinking about it tho).

This sounded a bit silly , as when/where in the West are conditions NOT adverse? wink

There is quite a bit of sorghum-sudan grass grown around here, and in periods of drought or extremely dry weather, nitrate poisoning is a very real threat. That's one reason I haven't grown any in years. It's good hay and grazing, but it can be a risky proposition.

In Iowa, nitrates can be of concern in a dry year in corn silage. Just my foggy memory, I think, the nitrogen gets hung up in the stalk, not developed into grain?
