A quick couple of questions on Remington M700 rifle weights.

Remington lists a M700 sps weighing 7 5/8 lb with a 26" barrel in 7mm Mag the same weight as a wood stock 7mm Mag, can anyone confirm that the M700 rifles in wood and synthetic stocks do indeed weigh the same or is this a mistake? Usually synthetic stock is a bit lighter than a wood stock rifle.

If anyone has dropped a 26" barrel 700 7mm or 300 mag into a McMillan edge what did it weigh with the stock change?

My thanks in advance for any replies !

Myth!

Factory synthetic stocks often weigh MORE than wood. Sometimes about the same and in rare cases just 1-2 oz less. I haven't weighed those exact rifles, but I've weighed many, many stocks over the years and that is what I've found. My guess is that the factory specs are accurate. Even most of the high end fiberglass stocks such as McMillan etc. weigh about the same as wood in their standard fill. You don't get a lighter stock until you get to the stocks made from Kevlar. An Edge stock will be about 1/2 lb lighter than what comes from the factory.

The laminated stocks are typically about 1 lb heavier than standard wood stocks, and most of the mid grade stocks like B&C that use a metal chassis are a touch heavier than factory wood, about 1/4 lb heavier.

I will have to drag some of mine out to weigh them. You’ve made me curious. They all weigh 7 to 8 lbs. I carry them with a sling on my shoulder so weight isn’t really a factor. It seems lots of people are worried about weight. Is everyone weak now? Rifle weight was never discussed until the last few years. We carried our 70’s, 700’s, Rugers, etc up and down hills. I never heard a hunter say his rifle was heavy.

Maybe we were too dumb to know they were heavy?

The older SPS stocks weighed around 36 ounces. The new ones with the grip panels, corrugated forend, & Supercell pads are quite a bit lighter. My latest version SPS short action BDL stock weighs 26.7 ozs

I'm just trying to get some accurate info on weights so I know what I am getting into. If the m700 sps weighs about 7.5 lb or so then it is what it is. I will just take that into consideration then.

Everytime I build a Rem700 rifle, I take off the old stock and put on a lighter non wood stock.
I weigh both of them.

Stocks for 2018
McMillan Hunter Rem700 LA 30 oz
McMillan /Holland Rem700 LA 31 oz
B&C Rem700 LA 43 oz
KIWI Rem700 LA 23 oz
KIWI Rem700 LA 23 oz
Stocky's Rem700 LA 48oz
Rem700 SA ADL 28 oz
B&C Rem 700 SA BDL 37 oz

So I can answer my own question since I just came home with a new m700 sps LH in 7mm Rem Mag 26" barrel and weighed it o n our scale and out of the box with no scope or rings it weighs exactly 7 lb 2 Oz instead of 7 5/8 lb as listed... for what it is worth.

I think I will put some Talley lightweight lows and a leupold 6x42 fx3 on it. I think this will make a really nice mule deer/black bear/ elk rifle for me.
