Not a pretty cut but enough spare for file work to 5/8ths.


Intial file work

Jewellers file work getting near my Intial scribe marks 360° around barrel I got after mike measurements.

Once you get the muzzle squared up, a round headed brass screw chucked up in a hand drill and some lapping compound will radius a nice crown on the barrel.

Your Exactly right bristoe.

Jewlers files and emery cloth for shoulder profile


Coencentric outside shoulder and face as best i could with hand tools


1st grind 1st brass bolt and valve lapping compound

2nd bolt used real light
Then 4ot steel wool spun
Then passed cotton ball test for snags.

What's it going on?

Got all that blue wonder waste of money crap off days ago
600 degree engine paint
Pic don't do it justice
Get me thru deer season till I can get it cerracoated next spring
Left crown unpainted so i can read the carbon star on wensday in case I might have to
do some fine tune filing

Put it back together in the morning with the float work I did on the forearm.

Free floated forearm from full length bed job someone did way back when.

It would pair shots at 100 yds if shot 10 - 15 mins apart.

Had verticle string issues when barrel got hot

Barrel needs to sing and vibrate on its own accord and not have heat and up pressure issues being full bedded like it was.

Copper fouling revealed 2 lands had fouling equal to the muzzle
Other 2 lands fouling stopped 1/4 th to 3/8ths down in the bore
Worn like someone had cleaned from the muzzle

Now remnants of fouling on all 4 lands end equally at muzzle

1.5 inch 3 shot 100 yd group is the goal hopefully

Have original ammo and another type for wensday.

Will try 2 others if results are not what I expect.

LOL. You ain't far off me some days. Took me 2.5 hours to pull a zipper and sew a new one in for wives favorite vest yesterday. New vest would have been cheaper but they don't make that one anymore and not much fits her as small as she is...

But boy can we figure out how to burn time sometimes.

I got 300 rds of golden tiger AK ammo coming in from SGammo for start of a SHTF stash on thursday.
I'm outta funds in the swiss bank account fund that the wife don't know about.....I did see that tool surfing the web.
I had to buy the valve lapping compound and ceramic engine paint to get the rifle up and running and hopefully shooting way better.
Everything else I had at the house.

I always used a tubig cutter to give me a scribe mark to file to before hacksawing one off.

That's a good idea.
The rollers on a tubing cutter would square that scribe mark well 360.

Lunchlady had a mole like this on her chin.

Btw that crown looks way better that what Wounded Warrior Gomez inc did on my mauser.

Just returned a box of hornady vintage match 196gr to midsouth shooters supply
They was cool about it, they know me.

Never optically recentered scope from the hornady stuff
Clean barrel 1st shot
Windage was kinda their, gave it 16 clicks up
Range 100yds
Scope on 3 power entire time
Privi partizin 196gr spfb

Gave it some dope after #2
Gave it 1 click down after #5
Figuring my reticle width on 3 power in ratio to the target is pretty well
Accounting for verticle deviation.

Then shot 5 times at broken up clay pigeons and white painted fist sized rocks
On the berm at around 115 -120yds
Making big plumes of dust outta em.

No heat or forearm pressure issues
Excellent fouling on all lands to end of bore
Tiny gas fouling marks around crown very even

80 plus yr old gun has a new life deer hunting with me.
It's a keeper and shoots ammo I can get online from Sgammo
For 14.95
I'm gonna go to the gun shop I got it from here local for 20 a box and get another 2 boxes from that lot number
for the next 2 yrs
50rds will last me awhile.
Shoot it some more in way cooler weather this fall before rifle season.

Hasbeen, how can you have a deer hunting fool and gunsmith on ignore. Thats unAmerican.

I'm not a gunsmith at all jag . I just do alot of my own stuff and for friends.
I also don't like paying outrageous prices for work I can do myself.
And I gotta have something to do between the end of turkey season and the start of deer season
I don't fish, and may, June, July and August don't have the letter R in them.

I probably ticked off or offended hasbeen1945 at some point among many others on here.

I decided long ago the only way to get bigger older bucks is to let all but real good ones and trash walk. I'm a trash killing machine and a doe thinner deluxe.

Unforunately for a buddy the biggest buck the wife has ever killed he wanted meat that weekend. More than happy to give him the 6-7 year old 10 point carcass. We kept the spikes and culls and a few does... ate high on the hog that way.

Gotta say you got some stuff looking good. Just a shame you have to slum around with that mouthy Richard slumlord though I do like and understand sweat equity very much
