OK I have to renege. I said I don't have any magnums in this thread and haven't for a few years. Well I ran into a Mossberg Patriot in .300 Win mag at a price I couldn't pass on. So I guess I'm back in the magnum game.

Looking back over sixty years of deer hunting, I can recall only four (80 yo memory, so let's say five or six) deer that I collected that could not have been taken with a .30-30.

Iām a little younger than you and only started Deer hunting in 1972, so thatās 46 yrs. I can honestly say there have been a lot of deer that I would NOT even have shot at if a 30-30 was all I had.
I donāt feel a guy must have any magnum but there are cartridges that give much better trajectory and terminal performance at longer ranges.

( I read that didn't I...? ) edit to insert - >>> " Good thing my heart issues healed up." yeah I read it in another thread. I don't KNOW anything about the Patriot - I've know the brand and have heard the name but.... -- but I hope it's a shooter for you. Good luck with it and hunting. Jerry

Thanks Jerry. My Doc gave me the go ahead to shoot "anything under a .50 sniper rifle". LOL. All I know about the Patriot is it feels nice and Ron Spomer says good things about it. It is a 22" barrel but Charlie Sisk says his test showed the 300 WM only loses 50 fps in a 22".

All in all I thot it looked good. Ron liked the design of the D B M and my only ? is how positive is the latch ? He also described the new trigger -- made me think of the Accu Trigger. I watched him holding and handling the rifle and it did NOT seem to be heavy. Good Luck with yours. Jerry

The latch seems good.

Glad to know the latch is positive. Not being a benchrest/comp shooter, my rifles are hunting rifles. A long time ago I figured out that I toted a rifle a whole lot more than I shot it. My Tikka T 3X 7 RM weighs 7 lbs. 9 oz WITH the scope. I did my load development, chronographed, and sighted the scope -pretty close- and the recoil was NOT too bad. Even at that---it's not a benchrest rifle. Jerry

I own two magnums out of the many rifles that I own. One is 416 Remington M70 and the other is a 375 H&H M70. I don't see a need for anything more in the lower 49.

I use my 300Wby mag for coyotes and deer. 300yd zero. +3.5 100, +3.75 200, 0"@300, - 7 400.w/165BTs. 165/180GR BTs and 180gr ABs. Minor aim point changes to 475. Never had to track a deer, heart shots DRT legs up EVERY TIME with little meat damage. Can down or hot n heavy load versatility for nearly anything but grizzly (which I'll probably never experience). I do have a Marlin 336 in 30-30 that I LOVE for in the trees... But the 300 WbyMag is my one tool for everything! BTW, a Limbsaver pad makes it a heavy 12ga recoil.

Started hunting deer with a 8x57. When I bough MY first rifle it was a 30/06, next was a 270, then a .308, .300 Win Mag, back to .308, and finally back to 8x57.
No plans to quit using 8x57 anytime soon, but, the .300 is still in the safe.

One, an Israeli Arms Timberwolf in .44 Magnum. Kicked like a mule due to the stock design, but I loved it. Wish I had it now.

I like magnums, they have their place and most of my rifles are magnums. These days I'm happy shooting one of my 30-06's.I guess it's because it's nearly perfect for most of my hunting.I recently got into 30-06's only about eight years ago after over 50yrs of hunting.Wish I'd found it sooner, might have a few less magnums.

I've owned a few, 300 rem ultra mag, 7mm rem mag, 300 wsm. Killed deer and elk with all 3 but finally went back to the 06 and 270win. For me, they kill just as dead, just as quick. Ymmv.

Non-magnums have their place. So do magnums.
This year I plan to take at least one magnum (.300WM or .338WM) on the elk hunt. I'll likely be shooting last (again). If one of the other shooters wounds one, I may be needed to help put it down. (Hopefully not, though.) Daughter #1 will be using a .308 Win/130g TTSX combo. She shoots it well, but at longer ranges I trust the .300WM and .338WM more.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
