Got this guy in the spotting scope yesterday, would love to see him during season. 7x6 with two months to grow.. Had a pretty hair raising experience with a black bear too, I swear I’m a bear magnet!.

I was on the crest of a Ridge surround by junipers with a good view of some distant meadows and I was looking at some deer through the spotter and was trying to get a picture of a pretty good buck using my phone in the spotter and all of a sudden I hear several huffs from right behind me. I’ve spent enough time around black bears to know exactly what was making the sound and it was real close like less than 30ft. I dropped the phone and dug my pistol out of my pack that I was leaning on as I heard him bolt through the trees, he huffed one more time before leaving for good. Pretty sure he was working the Ridge in the trees just before dark and must of got hit with my scent and was just reacting to it. It was cool but definitely got me thinking about my surroundings.

Nothing bigger than the inside of a pack when your pistol’s in it!

How do I know? Same way you do😊

Nice bull even now.

Did you need new underwear after the bear encounter?😀

If you do tag an elk down in that Medano country, best not let the meat hang over night. Bears will get on it quick.

Yeah I’m a bit concerned with the Bears, there’s a ton of bear sign down there. There’s no way I’m getting the meat out in one day where I’m hunting, I’ll cross the bear bridge when I get to it I guess. Think I’m gonna pick up a bear with caps tag in case I end up in that scenario, at least I’ll have options.

If you shoot the first bull you see, you’ll never get a big one.

I’m no veteran elk hunter, but I assure you if the first bull I see is that one I took a pic of , he’s gonna be dead!

I have three hanging on my walls that were the 1st I saw.Biggest is a 7x8.. Never pass up a legal elk . Colorado manages the elk for quantity, not quality. To find a 300+ bull on public land is a rarity unless one draws a trophy area that takes in excess of 15 pref points.More likely 20+.

Where AlaskaCub is hunting, more than likely that bull will be down on Wolf Springs ranch come opening day or sooner since archers will be pushing it a week or so earlier

Get a bear tag, it's the best way to guarantee you won't run into any bears, whatsoever.

I am late to this post, but --- an old timers trick that we have used elk hunting and having to leave some of the elk meat overnight was to hoist the quarters into a tree with rope. Then take you hunting shirt off and hang it there with the meat. The human scent will tend to keep predators away from it. Works for coyotes and black bears; but I don't know about Grizzlies. We don't have any Grizzlies in the areas we hunt in Eastern Oregon!
