Vintage car owner says bear-beaten car is 'bar room talk'

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Tom Cotter says he'll leave the dents in his rare vintage car for a while to relish the Alaska vacation story behind it. It's not every day that a pricey collector's item is damaged by a bear breaking into the vehicle to steal cookies.

Cotter, of Davidson, North Carolina, tells The Associated Press he'll hold onto the experience because "it's bar room talk."

Cotter's red 1965 289 Shelby Cobra sustained major damage to the vinyl roof and dents on the body when the bear broke into it last week at Alyeska Ski Resort, south of Anchorage. Fellow traveler, Woody Woodruff of Charlotte, North Carolina, had left a package of Fig Newtons in the car, and the cookies were missing after the break-in.

Cotter was leaving Alaska Monday after he toured the state for two weeks in his Cobra and several other car collectors, including Woodruff.

Cotter says he expects his insurance to cover the damages.

Lot #5090 - CSX3169 was built on work order #18044 opened on 10/1/65 and finished 12/1/65. Upon completion, the car was delivered to Hayward Motors and sold on 12/13/65 to J.S. Toma. This car was brought back to Hayward in April of 1966 for warranty work. The next known owner was Kevin Nugent, who sold the car in 1976 to Bob Able with 27,000 miles. The car was then sold to Bill Contesin in 1987. After being out of the public eye for many years, CSX3169 was found close to original condition in 2012. The current owner commissioned a full, no-expense-spared, nut and bolt restoration in its factory correct original shade of Vineyard Green. Well-documented by the Shelby American Registry. Original drivetrain, unmodified body and original Sunburst wheels. An extremely rare chance to win a true factory-spec 427 Street Cobra. BIG difference in value on a 427 v. 289 Cobra, but still a very nice and valuable car. Bet he's a little ticked at the friend who left the fig newtons in there.

What a shame on such a classic valuable car.... But it's too bad it wasn't captured on a surveillance video. That would have made for some real bar room talk... Or even a public service reminder not to leave food around in bear areas, or maybe even a Fig Newton commercial...... The possibilities are endless.

Reminds me of that scene in Tommy Boy when the buck wakes up and tears the convertible roof of the dude’s mustang to shreds and Tommy just dies, “THAT WAS AWEEEEEEE-some!”
