An enhanced drivers license works as well as a passport, so long as you're driving. Think you'll be turned back without one or the other.
Imagine your grave on a windy winter night. You've been dead for 70 years. It's been 50 since a visitor last paused at your tombstone..... Now explain why you're in a pissy mood today.

Getting back in the US requires a passport.

We might have found a chaff saving device like the one I borrowed last year.
I sent my pass port renewal off a few days ago....just found out about this chaff saver today.
I guess I will call the ports tomorrow.

It’s an American rule—technically you only need current identification to get into Canada. They’ll give you a hard time returning on the US side without one—just show ‘em current ID and then ask them to call the nearest American Embassy—they’ll let you in.

If you do not have a passport, you may use your birth certificate and a drivers license to return to the US. The border guards may whine a bit but they cannot keep you out. GD

It saves a LOT, of trouble to have the passport. I'd hate to cross either way without one.

GD True enough, but all that said, I much prefer to breeze right through (usually) with a passport. When I got mine renewed I also paid out a little more to get the passport card to carry in my wallet for those times when I might just hop across the border on impulse, go to lunch or something...and not have to carry my passport around in the truck.

I have only presented a (NY) Enhanced Drivers License to cross back and forth and have never had any issues. I cross during the hunting season but I doubt that matters. The EDL is good for driving across but I'm told that a passport is required to fly over.
In the hunting camp there is always talk about companions who were refused entry into Canada due to a prior DWI, domestic violence charge or some other unspecified or unclear matter that could be 50 years old. When traveling in a group, it may be good to determine that you have clearance in advance if there is a reason for concern.

This seems to be the correct answer for my area at least. American side said they could detain me until they were certain of my citizenship.....but that a birth certificate and DL would be sufficient. I gots to get to combining so........I will give her a shot! Thanks everybody.
