Picked up a really nice takedown today. Great gun and a cool companion to the solid frame. Great shape, 270,xxx, no extra anything. Fine crazing on the wood finish, hardly any wear anywhere, perfect bore. Seller thought it had been refinished (so nobody bid on it but me :)) but I could tell it was original. * photos are terrible. Blind squirrel here.

Thought it was interesting how far apart the dovetails on the two rifles are. The solid frame is #217,xxx and takedown #270,xxx.

Nope, bottom feeder only.

If you are referring to the rear sight dovetail it has to do with when they were produced. The 1899's rifles and SR had the rear sight mounted out farther on the barrel. The 99-A, B, C & D had the rear sight located closer to the receiver.

You have a post-WWI 1899-A and a 99-B.

Thank you for the information. Here's another solid frame 30-30 with a crescent butt but a shorter barrel and integral raised ramp front sight. #326,xxx, ( #217,xxx on top) Also a pretty clean rifle. Must be getting pretty late for a crescent buttplate huh?

Bottom gun is a prewar 99A. I think it is one of the best looking models. Not a lot of them around.
