Funny how a catchy marketing phrase from 100+ years ago can still get you excited. smile

I now have on hand a Boddington #1 in .450 Nitro Express. Weighs 7 lbs, 11 oz, less scope & rings. Arguably, this is the most powerful factory #1 made, as I'm assuming you can load it it up a bit over factory in the #1.

The wood is plain, but nicely checkered. I've seen very few Boddingtons with fancy wood, so I'm guessing the stocks were chosen more for strength. It will be interesting getting it running; I hope it's as accurate as my .475 Turnbull.

I believe I have some of that brass as well. I’ll check when I get home.

Ruger did a No1 in 458Lott. I would rather have the classic 450. But as for most powerful, that would be the Lott.

Hornady was doing brass and ammo. It was available at cabelas of all places. I think that is no longer listed there.

I too though it was 3", but google confirms 3 1/4. That is the Hornady version as well. I think Boddington and Hornady were together on this revival.

Factory loads, yes the Lott is more powerful. But the 3 1/4" case is .45" longer than the Lott, so loaded to equal pressure, it should be more powerful.

I would not argue that. I got the 450/400 version. Its a real fun gun to play with. Nice thing about the 450 is bullet availability. All these old British NE rounds have large capacity. You may find all that space is a mixed blessing smile

I have it in 450-400 3 inch. Not a Boddington edition however. I've loaded it up to where a 300gr bullet is traveling 2500 FPS+ via a load provided by Mule Deer. It gets your attention thats for sure. I'm looking at finding some reduced loads for it and use it deer hunting.

EdM what hand loading stuff do you have?

A box of factory Hornady ammo, brass, dies and CNC machined aluminum loading blocks (2) with 450-400 milled on the side.

A #1 in .450 Nitro Express sounds really cool.

But I sorta cringe thinking about 500 grainers at 2000+fps out of a 7lb 11oz rifle.

My #1 .45-70 with 400's at 1800fps rattle my cage after a few rounds. Granted its probably a shade lighter than that.

GSP, I've had exceptional results with the Lyman 410655 over almost a full case of Trail Boss. It's just about a duplication load of my Shiloh 40-70 loaded with the same bullet over 62 grs. of 2F. I know what that 40-70 load does to deer so the smokeless load for the 450/400 should perform as well. In the Ruger the load is very accurate and the numbers across the screens are impressive for consistency.

the 458 Lott has a big advantage a 458 win. mag cartridge can be used in the 458 Lott chamber also, both are powerful 458 Lott and 450 Nitro ,but my 458 Lott well do just fine for me in my Number 1

I shoot that same load in my 40-70 straight, and you are right, that bullet is a stone cold hammer. I also load the 410655 with 60 grains of 2f in my 40-65, and frankly, it makes me wonder why I shoot anything else.

A fella certainly doesn't need anything else. For years I used my 45-90 with a 480 gr. NEI bullet that reminds me of an elongated Keith type semi-wadcutter with about a 38-40 cal. meplat. It was even better than the Lyman 410655 if you can believe that. Loaded over 80 grs. of the old GOEX Ctg., I never hit an animal with that bullet that didn't go down where it stood. One mulie did take one step with a front leg before collapsing but that was it. When that bullet hit it sounded like a fence post hitting flesh.

That 480 grain NEI bullet sounds a lot like the Lyman 457121. The Lyman is a 475 grain bullet with seven grease grooves and a nose very similar to a Keith bullet. I have used it quite a bit in my 45-70 and my 45-110, and anything hit with it goes right down. Despite its appearance, that bullet is also very accurate at long distance.
