Is anyone chmabering a .257 Roberts anymore? I remember and also regret not buying a m70 FWT when Winchester was making them. Seems like I’ve looked everywhere. Have I overlooked one?

Wasn’t aware they chambered one. Course I wouldn’t have known. I went the kimber route once, was the nicest feeling, slickest handling, most pleasant to carry POS I ever owned. Never again. Lol.

I've got one of the last M70 FWT's in the safe. It's pretty nice, someday I'll wack a deer with it...might end up waiting until I retire and decide less recoil is better(although my 8x57 certainly isn't bad to me as of yet).

and I’ve read on here that Montana’s M70 clone is better than the current original; no personal experience.

You could always check Gunbroker etc for A Rem Classic or a Win M70 ....though I think the latter is fetching a premium these days...

My Ruger #1B has a long throat but shoots very well with 100gr. and heavier bullets. The Gunbroker usually has some of those listed. Usual caviate applies.

Bought a Kimber .257 Roberts last spring and looking for another one. The problem with Kimber is they will build one, but don't always have them available. I looked on the Cabela's, they have a few used ones in .257 Rob.

I bought a Cabela's special edition Model 70 featherweight and while the rifle is well finished and is a pleasure to handle and shoot, getting it to shoot inside of 2 inches at 100 yards has been a challenge. I also found several instances of what I believe to be error in assembly (mag box pinch, recoil lug not bearing properly in bedding, barrel contact in the channel). But apparently this rifle is an exception not the rule, so don't let my one sampling shape your opinion completely. The rifle has accounted for a big whitetail buck and several hogs. It is the smoothest Model 70 I have shot.

I also believe that the Model 70 in 257 is set up with a long throat and it is built on a long action (you can't seat a bullet out long enough to come close to mag box length in this rifle). Factory ammo I've purchased all seems to be made to cycle through short actions, with really short OAL, consequently the bullets jump a fair bit in my particular rifle.

Were I buying again, I would make sure the rifle is properly configured for factory loads that I could obtain. Factory ammo is too expensive to simply shoot it for the brass.

All that said, I love the 257 and wish it were more widely supported by ammo manufacturers.

Bucks County Arms and Ammo had a limited run of 150 Ruger Hawkeyes, this time last year. I bought one and I love it. The fit and finish is outstanding. They could possibly still have a few. I have actually considered getting another to save for the kids.

It doesn't look like they have a web presence. I would think there would be demand for those. Seems like Ruger 257 Roberts rifles sell well.

I suspect Cooper also makes a 257 Roberts also.

Someone had Ruger make up a batch a year or so ago. I think they were in the 800 range. I had a 6mm years ago and sort of wanted another...but figured the 257 would be a close step up. I'm was leaning towards one in a Kimber Hunter but don't know anymore. Buddy just got the hunter in a creed and we can't get it to shoot like advertised. Well, we can if we wait 30 minutes between 2nd and 3rd shots. My model 7 708 shoots circles around his kimber.

My Kimber shaped up nicely with a Broughton 5C barrel...

I have one that shoots well and in great condition for a 1955 model 70. I bought a custom rifle last July and don't need 2 257 Roberts rifles. It can be bought...

No dog in the fight. But, Shrap's Pre-64 above would be a classy .257 Roberts to hunt. For new gear, Montana Rifle Company ASR and X3 rifles are both offered in .257 Roberts.

I'd buy the one from Shrap before I even considered a new one.

My Ruger UL is the same way, a nice deep throat but factory ammo doesn't shoot well in it. With the right reloads it shoots just fine.
