Wild West Guns sent out an email today with a few new products. I don't have any use for these myself, but they might interest someone:

First is a quick take down screw for the lever. To me this just seems like another protrusion to catch a finger or tear skin on.

Next is a hammer extension in blue or stainless. Only difference between the LH and RH model seems to be which way the company logo is stamped, although it does say the LH has reversed threads.

Interesting thing about their hammer extension. They suggest using it opposite of how they are typically seen. In other words, right hand would go on the left side of the hammer. Does anyone actually do this???? Not sure how that would work with a scope that is presumably already mounted too low to use the hammer as is.

Wording from the email:

"The Wild West Guns Hammer head comes in a left-hand or right-hand version and in blue or stainless. Mounting this on your rifle makes it easier to cock the hammer on your Marlin with or without a scope installed. The right handed version points to the left when installed for the right hand shooter. This allows you to access it with your thumb while shouldering the rifle. The left handed version points to the right for the left handed shooter."

Agreed about the takedown screw but the hammer extension looks interesting. I would put it on like I normally do though, on the right because I'm right handed.

Keep moving forward!

I'm just wondering if they worded the email wrong.

"Looking for a quick way to release your Wild West Guns Big Loop lever..." Yeah, you just unscrew that screw the same way you do the factory part so I'm not seeing the "quick way" here.

That screw can loosen over time as you work the lever, so if you just finger tighten it then it's likely to loosen more quickly, and if you use a screwdriver then you aren't doing one thing differently. And that round bottom slot they provide is a recipe for a buggered up screw head - you're certainly not going to get the torque you would with a flat bottom slot. I can see how you might use a coin to remove or tighten it in the field so you don't need a screwdriver, but most folks venturing afield these days carry a multi-tool of some kind with a screwdriver blade that will work just fine for the factory screw until you get home and have a more suitable tip.

Nothing against WWG, I don't know that much about them overall, but this is an answer to a question no one asked.

A lot of people will be buying the left hand spur. If anybody actually buys their trinkets?

I have to agree. I've not used the WWG hammer extension but have used others. I've tried them on both sides and it's much easier to manipulate on the opposite side. I'm left handed so having the extension on the right side makes it natural for me as I shoulder the rifle. If the extension is on the left side, I have to fold my thumb in on the left side to manipulate the hammer then move it to the firing grip. With it on the right side, my thumb naturally goes to the extension and then into the firing grip as the hammer is cocked. It feels a lot more fluid to me.

Not sure I'd call them trinkets. I like their triggers a lot. I dropped one in my SS guide gun and came out with a 20-22 ounce pull, exactly where I like it. No creep. Got rid of the floppy rattly noises, too.

OTOH, I put one in an 1894 (.32 mag) and it did not work so well .. somehow it seemed like the cartridges didn't feed right with the trigger in place. Doesn't make any sense to me, seems like it shouldn't matter, but it did.

Opinions vary:

I have the Happy Trigger and it is user installed and excellent

I have the take down screw and find it to be a very hand accessory. The screw easily stays put when hand tightened and is easily removed without a screwdriver. If you like thigs a bit tighter, its designed to be tightened or loosened with a penny.

My factory hammer spur always loosened on its own. What a PITA. Ultimately, Grizzly Arms put a hammer spur on that NEVER loosened. If the WWW spur stay put without a tiny allen key it has my vote.

What Mart said x 2. A right hander wants the hammer spur to be , well, handy. Keep it on the same side as the thumb on firing the gun. It's just faster that way. I always wondered why a right handed bolt gun has no safety on the left side WHERE YOU PUT YOUR THUMB??? An African PH once said he figured some of the dead PHs might have NOT died if the safety was on the same side as the thumb making a half second difference in stopping the charge. Suit y'self. Ranger Point Precision has done a lot of work for me. Their products are high quality and the owners are nice folks. I know them personally.

Regarding hammer spurs, I see the logic of the extension pointing opposite of the shooter's dexterity orientation. But, like everything else, preference is usually driven by what we are used to. To each his own.

Regarding hand-graspable take down screws, I have RPP's take down screws on at least a dozen of my Marlins - probably more. When the infamous Marlin Jam pays me a visit in the field, the screws are much appreciated. And yes, it has happened to me in the past. Once, on a bear hunt in Saskatchewan, I shot a honey-blonde black bear and in my excitement I short-stroked my Marlin Guide Gun. I had to clear the jam before I could track my wounded bear in the marsh. If I had not been able to get my guide gun back in service, I would have likely lost the bear. As it is, I found it and have a beautiful rug.
