It's a bumper crop for black walnuts around here this year and there's trees all over the place. I've got a big tree right out my front door that's dropping them all over the yard. It was getting hard to walk for them so I spent some time scooping them up this afternoon. They're almost as big as tennis balls. I've got two other trees way out back that's dropping them everywhere also.

I've got 2 big trash cans full of walnuts in the garage now. I don't know how many pounds they represent, but it was all I wanted to drag them in there from the front yard. I'd guess 250 to 300 pounds total. There's about 4X that much left on the ground and more falling every minute.

A place down the road is paying $15 per hundred pounds for them. It's kind of a nuisance, but I've got to get them out of the yard, anyway,....and it takes about 30 minutes to scoop 100 pounds of them with a rake and a snow shovel.

I might have to see how many black walnut trees are accessible to me around here. It wouldn't be much trouble to pocket $30 an hour as long as they're around.

Walnuts are great! A hassle to hull, and crack, and dig the nuts out. A hand crank corn sheller will dehull them.

Don't know about shucked. They buy them like this.

How many thousands of dollars are trees like that going for nowadays?

Love them. I spent a lot of time on my grandpa's porch with a hammer and a nail.

They buy em with the skin on, sell em after tumblin the skin off.

Some places crack em open, and charge a little more.

That's what I'm interested in.

I have no idea.

When I was a kid someone had one of the trees stolen from their yard one night. A big crime in the area, not much else. I've heard that black walnut doesn't play nice with other trees. Is this true? I've tried growing some up here, but really it is out of there zone until global warming gets going good. So far the deer eat the new ones faster than I can plant them.

Bout 5 yrs ago at the steelyard here in town, I watched these two old gray-haired jiggaboos haul in a beau james chevy with a bed heaped full. They scaled in, shoveled it all out and scaled back across. We was in there paying for piece of angle iron. The scalemaster paid them ole cats $16 dollars for the whole load.

we had some go for 6000$ plus in 2011, not sure what they go for right now, but id guess veneer grade is still in that range mind these were veneer logs in the 24"+ diameter.

Need to hit the creekbottom. Need some to make some dye out of. Got some stuff I wanna dye.

If you get about 10 of them in the hull, mash em up in a five gal bucket with about 2 gal of water

Wait until you find out they pay 15.00 for the hulled weight... probably 50.00 for a pickup load now days. I made a lot of money on them when I was a young kid. Or what seemed like a lot of money at that age. Probably 35.00-40.00 every night after school for a week or 2. Late nineties roughly. Then you get older and learn what work is bucking hay.

Walnut is skookum. Fine slingshot ammo, good eating, great for shooters. What's not to like?

Y'all want to see a timber price that will surprise? Poke around and see what the termites will pay for mature magnolia with a 36" butt or larger.

As kids, we used to round up scrap lumber and pallets and set up apposing forts about 25 yds apart in the back yard. Then we would duck for cover and pitch recently fallen black walnuts at each other.

Mom was not happy when she saw my previously white T shirt after taking a half dozen hits from fresh juicy walnuts.

In college I took a lab class where we found various uses for plants growing wild. Some of the ladies died woolen yarn and wove tapestries. I was amazed at all the different colors they managed to produce from different treatments using walnut hulls.
