How do I tell if my 71 is long tang or short tang?
# 21964 is a 1942 rifle if my information is correct.

If it is 1942 it is short tang. The upper tangs of these earlier guns are 3 7/8" in length. The later (post-September, 1937) Model 71's have the "short tang, long comb" configuration. The tang is 1" shorter.
Here is some info http://www.leverguns.com/articles/model71_info.htm

Go to Gunbroker and compare the wrist area of a 1936 or 1937 M71 to a later 1940 or 1950 rifle. The difference will be clear.

Winchester never referred to M71’s as “Deluxe”. Winchester listed and referred to them as the M71 “Special”....

Shows my age I guess as our auto were "deluxe" if they had any upgrades.

No "LTDs" etc.
