I've never been a catfisherman but decided to give it a try. Looking around in the garage, I found Mom's old gear in the top of the garage. It's been there 25+ years since she passed. Mom was an avid catfisher.
A recent thread praised the Swedish made ABU's and mom's pole had a 5000 series on it. After all these years of heat and moisture in the garage, it's still slick.
Due to health issues I no longer take the boat out by myself. Fishing off the dock is still productive. Last week I made my first attempt for catfish. After about an hour I noticed the line moving and gave it about 3' of slack and got the landing net ready, set the hook and the fight was on. Pulled up not a catfish but an Alligator Snapping Turtle. The landing net is 12"x16", turtle was too big to fit. Managed to release the turtle without harm. My guess , it weighed about 70 pounds.

I had one about that size eat a 30 pound flathead off one of my jug lines a couple months ago. SOB ate every scrap of meat off that fish.
The local aquarium here has one they call Sampson, he’s about 125-150 years old and weighs 140 pounds. Amazing creature.

Snapping turtles are better on the table than the catfish. We used to set lines with chicken necks and a big hook around the bay for snapping turtles. I even caught one under the ice in a 330 Coni trapping beaver, nice winter change of pace meal.
