To All,

Spring cottontails (the young of the year) are easily shot, easily dressed & TASTY.
(I once shot 16 in less than a hour on our farm. - As they "breed like rabbits", you will not make a dent in the population by hunting them. - I use an old .22 pump rifle loaded with .22 shorts.)

Swamp rabbits are larger than cottontails & are also excellent fare. = I fry them like chicken with cream gravy, biscuits & fried potatoes. - You can feed a good-sized crowd for about 10-12 bucks.

yours, tex

I like rabbit, wild or tame. Used to eat them a lot, but they are a rare commodity here now. It has been that way for a few years. Lots of hawks, owls, coyotes and fox. Coyotes are hard to get rid of and they do not call well here. I have not tried trapping. My hunting buddy and I kill a few every deer season, but it is by chance. I have never been able to call one in by using a mechanical or mouth call. miles

Wabbit salad is hard to beat and when BBQ'ed is better than yard bird . We usually kill a few while bird hunting. Always a welcome addition.

Simply roasted over a fire is best.

A little salt and pepper if you feel like being fancy.

We are seriously thinking about raising some meat rabbits.

I raised a few meat rabbits when I was in high school. Mom always told the sisters that they were extra large chickens lol.

Years ago, we would always shoot a few rabbits for camp meat. Always check the livers for spots to ensure that they
do have Tularemia. Make sure that you cook them well. Like Jim said, mighty fine cooked over an open fire.
Mesquite roasted chicken is might fine grub.

We raised some tame rabbits for a while, and everybody loved the meat. Worked fine until a chicken snake got in and ate up the babies, while I was off working, and the wife had to kill the snake full of babies, that was hung up in the wire of the cage. Ended that deal. miles

because it is hard to tell the young tender ones from the oldsters I usually flour and brown the pieces and toss them in the pressure cooker for 10 minutes. The browned flour makes a great gravy and every piece is fall-off-the-bone tender and good!
