Were there any model 1895 Savages made with a 20” barrel? Local auction here is advertising one, but I thought the only option was a 26” barrel on the early rifles prior to 1899s. Thanks

Never Say Never.. the 1895's were normally sold in 26" and 22" on the carbines by default. But special order were possible, and bubba could easily have cut one down.
Also possible it's a ms-identified 1899 saddle ring carbine or 1899H with low serial number. But worth checking out.

The Savage factory shortened the barrels of three 1895 carbines (SRC's) to 20 inches after they started 1899 production. Supposedly they were all exported. I imported one back from Canada. We know of another one in New Zealand. The also changed these rifles to the 1899 type bolt. We also know they did custom applications. I also have an octagon barrel rifle with a 22" barrel, high grade wood and the checkering Marlin was putting on a few of the rifles. With Savage never say never, but I would be very careful about this rifle. A lot of the early rifles were shortened by owners or gunsmiths to make them handier. David

Thanks guys I appreciate the info. The serial number is fairly early, 3276. Only picture is saw looked like it’s in fair shape but I’ll have to see what it looks like when we get to the auction.

That's a very low serial number, but it's also likely to be one of the last ones shipped. They didn't go out in serial number order.
Does it have a barrel band? Round or octagon barrel?

Definitely not a saddle ring carbine then. Hope it's factory special order, but I'm always pessimistic about that. Standard length was 26".

Well I was able to pick up this rifle, looks to be close to original. There is one serial number stamped in the forearm, the buttstock and buttplate all match. Barrel address is correct for the 1895. I cannot tell if the barrel was cut or if it is from the factory. Once I figure out how to post picks I’ll put a couple up.

Shouldn't be a serial number on the forearm of an 1895. That's fine. There's a forum on the campfire called Image Gallery, you can do a post there and upload pictures. Or use something like imgr or flickr to upload your pictures, and copy the links here.

That's a very nice 1895. The short barrel is interesting. I don't know much about 1895s but the front sight looks right, as far as where its located. Can 1895s be lettered?

Lee Yes, 1895's can be lettered. I bought one years ago with a 20" octagon barrel. It lettered as shipped with a 26" round. I also bought one from ctw with a 28" barrel, which lettered as correct. Doug

I believe the front site is a Lyman 4b Ivory hunter. So what does it take to get one of these old Savages lettered. I would be interested to know if it came from the factory or if it was sent back. Sorry for the delayed responses, it’s deer season😁
