This past June Beaver10 invited me out to hunt Roosevelt Elk in Oregon’s Wilson Unit. Beaver has hunted these mountains for the last four decades. We spent last week scouting prior to the short four day season. Thursday night we were joined by two of Beaver’s hunting pards, Jason and Mike. Mike brought his 16 year old son along for his first Elk Hunt—super cool. The season opened Saturday. Conditions were mild, dry, sunny and clear—most outside the norm for a Wilson Unit elk hunt . Saturday afternoon, our very own FredIII surprised us by coming down for the final three days of the season. I’ve started a detailed write up and have lots of pictures to go through, but wanted to get this up in the meantime. I can’t thank Beaver and his wonderful bride enough for a spectacular time. Thank you for the rides to and from the airport, for the spectacular oceanfront accommodations, for the top shelf libations and week of steak dinners. I could go on and on! I’d also like to thank Beaver’s Elk hunting crew for their warm welcomes, patience, and camaraderie. Thank you Fred for the great microbrews, Manners garb, help butchering the elk and for the fantastic cape job. I’m overwhelmed by the generosity.

5x5 Roosevelt Elk, Wilson Unit, NW Oregon, 475 yrds.  Public land hunt - pack out.

Indeed it is...It’s the main reason some who’ve spent their entire life hunting these mountains practice and practice some more to be very proficient at making a solid hit off a pack, prone, with sticks, and bipods on our game animals. Many times you just can’t get closer to them without being busted or the landscape prevents closing the distance...With that said; if I can get closer, I do. I certainly don’t back up to make a hero shot. 😎

We used to do the December cow hunt in the Wilson unit when I archery hunted. Actually we called it the penalty hunt for the country shown in these pictures. In all the years I hunted that unit I never saw a day like the one you guys had. I know it has been an exceptionally dry November but that weather is still crazy! Both my boys killed their first elk there on a youth hunt and I took one cow and helped pack out half a dozen more. Your legs and lungs get a real workout in that unit.

Awesome, congrats Kingston. Glad to see the report, and images. The Wilson and Trask units are some of my favorite parts of the state. And for those that don't know, that's not an easy hunt given the hunting pressure from Portland, relatively short season, and terrain. Great job, Kingston, Beaver, and F3.

I love the pictures especially the one with Saddle Mountain in the background. It’s my backyard but seen through others pictures it’s a reminder of how beautiful it really is here. Taken for granted most the time because it’s what we’re used to. You done good Kingston. Lots of guys that live here only kill one or two in their lives.

My family is very fortunate too. My wife and I have been married for 12 years and we’ve never bought beef at the store with the exception of a nice steak here and there.
