Didja happen to notice the year on that catalog?

Redfield is a good name, many an animal has been taken with them. I’ve owned many, my first was a 3x9 widefield with a post and crosshair.

I will agree with this as well. I wondered what the big fuss was with that particular model of scope as everyone is after it. The eyebox seemed pretty small compared to the rest of my Leupold VX-1s and it was very dark around the edges of the view. I swapped it for a 2-7x VX-1 and its way easier to get behind.

I find it very interesting that Leupold has all but killed Redfield's web presence....

This is probably an example how we all look through optics differently. Since August I've put around 550 rounds through four rifles developing elk and pronghorn loads--two rifles for my son and two for me. VX-1, VX-2 in 2-7, and a Vari-X III and VX3i in 2.5-8. From the bench at 100 yds to prone out to 500 yards. Shoot five rounds, record velocities and make notes in my load notebook, set the rifle aside to let the bbl cool, and move to the next rifle. In other words switching from the 2-7's to the 2.5-8's constantly. I immediately notice the differences in the scopes. The 2-7's are a great scope and really all a guy needs for most big game hunting I encounter in the Rockies, but the 2.5-8 is still easier to get behind--whether the scopes are at lowest magnification or at the highest.

Plus I don't dial because I ain't shooting beyond 500 yds and even then it will be a rare event to encounter the situation/conditions that I would shoot beyond 400 yds. Instead I use my ballistic reticles, and the B&C reticle is mo' better in my opinion over the LR reticle. I also have a Burris with the Ballistic Plex, and I like that reticle a bit better than the LR reticle.

Mark me down too, I think the crosshair seems too fine for low light in addition to the other reasons.

If your ranges are shorter, I'd recommend looking for a NOS VX-1 Shotgun Scope so that you get the heavy duplex reticle.

Back when Leupold didn't charge an arm and a leg to change a reticle, I sent in VX-II and VX-2 2-7x33s to have the heavy duplex reticle installed in place of the standard duplex reticle.

I find that the heavy duplex reticle is easier to see at very first and very last legal hunting light, even with inferior lens coatings on the Vari-X IIc and Rifleman series scopes.

Between those two 2-7x33mm scopes, the broad strokes are going to be extremely similar (Length, weight, field of view, adjustment range, etc). Your main difference will be some newer better lens coatings on the Freedom for a bit better color and brightness in low light.

Regarding Redfield.com, the website has been stripped down to the basics, but we do still manufacture the Redfield Revolution line of riflescopes.

When the Redfield Revolution scopes were introduced they were essentially a re-badged VX1 and sold for a little less. But since that time the VX-1 was upgraded to essentially the same performance level as the older VX-2 and sold for only slightly more than the Redfield which is still the same today as it was when introduced. It isn't bad, just not quite as good as the similar priced Leupolds.

The VX-1 and VX-2 have both been discontinued and replaced by the VX-Freedom, which is supposed to be somewhere between the VX-1 and VX-2 in quality. To be fair my only experience with a VX-Freedom is to look through one in a store, but I actually own the others in question. Unless the price is significantly different, and it is not, I'd go with the Leupold over the Redfield in this instance.

I had a a Revolution 2-7. I was completely underwhelmed by it. It was reasonably bright. It didn't stick around long. Bushnell and Burris offer better products at that price point.

Don’t own a Redfield but have looked through them. To my eyes VX-2 glass is noticeably better and Freedom glass is supposedly the same as VX-2.

While you are listening to Consumers - you might tell your management that MOST people who have used the WIDE DUPLEX would MUCH Rather have a Standard Duplex in the FX-II and FX-3 Matte scopes, and that is is completely RIDICULOUS to offer a Duplex in the Gloss, but not in the matte.

People do not opt for a different reticle based on the finish. This poor decision for Leupold to do this, and have continuing doing this, when I read dozens of folks wishing for a plain Duplex, shows Leupold does not want to give shooters what they want.........Even Weaver has a standard plex reticle for half the cost.

We want a 4.75x40 and some short scopes like a 4x20mm and a 3x33

I bet a FX3 4.75x40 fixed with a duplex and illuminated would sell like hotcakes.

I own the Redfield 2x7. I'm very happy with it but the Freedom line wasn't available when I bought it. Looking at current prices I find that the Freedom model is about $20 more than the Revolution. Personally I would go with the Leupold Freedom model over the Revolution if my price information is correct.
