I have KUIU super down pro it is fairly warm, however it is thin and not wind resistant.

I however need 3x what would guys recommend for puffy that doesn’t break the bank,

I know the Kelvin Down WS from Sitka is a good one however what else is out there ?

If wind resistance is your concern you'll want baffled construction as opposed to sewn through, a la the Absolute Zero linked above. Going to be tough to find something worth the trouble that isn't $300+. I'm not sure what a bank breaker is in your book, but high end down is a good way to do it

That one linked above is too small. I need a 3x as I am 6’5 285 lbs

Mountain Hardwear sizes their clothing very large...you may want to go in a store and just try their XXL to see if it fits...

I've probably read all 18 pages of the "Warmest Puffy" thread and there is scant mention of any kind of puffy pants. We all have a closet full of jackets of various descriptions, but how many of us have given a lot of thought to keeping the lower half of our bodies equally warm? Your quads and gluts are big muscle groups with a lot of blood flow and if half of you gets cold, the other half isn't going to be far behind. When I bought my mountain climbing down parka, I bought the pants too and on the warmer days when I don't pack the whole outfit, a thinner top and those puffy pants over wool pants are all I'll need.

The Kuiu Super Down pants are the only puffy I’ve tried and they seem to work quite well. I love that they simply zip over your regular pants once you hike to a glassing point. Just ensure you order them large enough to to zip over and retain their loft.

If you really want to cheat, and have the space available, wrap a Kifaru Woobie around your lower body.

Puffy pants go every time a puffy jacket does.


There are few true cold weather puff pants.

I have two versions of military surplus puffy pants. One is by patagonia, looks like their compressor pants but in a foliage/green. The other pair are PCU level 7 pants which are a lot fluffier and heavier. If I'm sitting out in 20 degrees to mid 30s I'll bring the lighter ones. For the last few years I've been using them to supplement my 0 degree sleeping bag when it's really cold. I haven't used the PCU pants much but I'm really glad to have them.

I've been thinking about Kuiu's down pants, but at those prices it will take a long time to work it's way to the top of the budget.

If you're looking for a mid-weight jacket rather than a full house parka:

I have a Sitka puffy type jacket I bought 7-8 years ago and paid around $230 for it, it's wind and moisture resistant, and warm.

I have some version of Browning's "Hells Canyon" series of jackets I bought last year from Sierra Trading Post for about $60.

Guess which one is just as wind resistant, just as warm, lighter weight, and fits me a tad better?

Are those Surplus Level 7 ECWCS pants any good? For $29 it’s worth a try I suppose. My Kuiu puffy pants don’t fit real well and my wife has pretty much claimed them.

You move much in that jacket? How does it handle the jaggers? Or do you recommend it as a mid-layer? Wear it when carrying some weight? Does it stuff easily into your pack?

$30 is a great price. I don't have the Kuiu's but I've got to believe they have most of the functionality at 1/10th the price. You will want a good compression bag to carry them. I use a kifaru 5-string medium bag for my fluffy layers.

Yes, they are warm. I still wear them and the PCU versions.

Suggestion: Have them add some length to your pack straps before you find out too late. And I forgot, they make bibs that match.

Ya I’m thinking of ordering a pair. Seems like a good price for a custom build. Would you recommend the sewn through or baffled option?

They recommend a minimum of 5.5oz of fill (10 F rating) for the baffled option, do you think that would be too warm for most of your uses? I compared with a couple other puffy down pant brands and 5.5oz seems on the high end for backpack style down pants.

Nope. My use for down puffy pants is a stationary layer. I want them as warm as possible. I’ll be doing 8.5oz and baffled.


The reason you see puff pants with so little insulation is because people really don’t sit still in true cold weather. If you are moving at all, even relatively light insulation can work fine.

I'll be helping a pard with a bison tag in AK in February. Thinking I may pick up a pair of those ECWS britches if I can find a pair in my size (XXL). Thanks for all the conversation.

If you do get puffy over pants, just make sure that you get the easy on zipper to the hip versions on both legs. I could live without the Velcro addition on mine, but once you have a lot of layers and big boots on, you will appreciate those big leg openings. Mine don't go on until I get to my stand and let me tell you, moving around getting dressed in a tree stand isn't easy.

I threw a pair in the cart too... my patagonias are tired, and were never all that warm to start with.

And I can't find them in my size. Guess I could lose weight, but I'd rather just buy the pants. I did find some German stuff at a ridiculously cheap price, but not sure if they are a workable solution.

The pro is marketed to go over your shell layer (wind resistant). My eventual plan is buy the super pro to go over my yukon jacket and base layers.

I just ordered a pair of Western Mountaineering Flight down pants. 4.5 oz of 850 down fill, full side zips, Gore WS seat and knees, DWR treatment of fabric, total wt 12.5 oz. Bought them on Amazon for $300.00. I can't sit for more than 2 hours and I think these will be deluxe.
