I've got the Gränsfors Outdoor Axe, which is slightly longer handled but every bit as awesome. Taking antlers off a skull, chopping the spine to get to the tenderloins out or for making a warming fire, that thing is always attached to my pack. Love it. Don't ask about the one tenderloin....long story.

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

I've got a Gransfors and a Wetterlings. Steel quality seems about equal between the two. The Gransfors handle is better, being actually boiled in a vat of BLO, it doesn't swell/shrink with weather/humidity changes so the head remains tight year round. The Wetterlings handle is just surface varnished and does swell/shrink. The Wetterlings sheath is much better than the Gransfors though, being made of much stiffer leather and having a built in belt carrier with slots .

Splitting the pelvis, for one.

found a deal at LL Bean for a GB hatchet. It arrived today, but I believe I'll just gift it to my son for Christmas, and keep the little Wetterlings I have been using for many years.

he does. The lad shot a fat 4 point this morning. I took the little ax out and he used it skinning and processing the buck. It sure works well for that purpose. I'll wrap the empty box for Christmas. lol

Thanks for the reminder on the Gransfors Bruk hatchet. Citi sent a 25% off LL Bean postcard and I had lost track of the expiration date, which was today. Ordered one this morning. $105 + 6% Caesar's share (FL).
Believe there are also 25% off downloadable coupons floating around.

What do to guys use a hatchet for when cleaning deer? The back edge is pretty handy skinning when nearly frozen..

What do to guys use a hatchet for when cleaning deer? Gotta admit that while aware that there is more than one way to skin a cat (or a buck), I'm a little puzzled about that one myself.

a sharp, small hatchet makes a great skinner. The hatchet can be used for easily splitting the breast bone and pelvis if you feel the need. Smacks right through those leg joints as well.

I've always used a saw, but am open to trying different ways. Does it make a mess? Seems there would be bone fragments everywhere

The chest is relatively soft, the blade just slips right through. Heck, even a saw means there is some bone detritus floating around
