Have a friend with a Mod99 in 250-3000. The bore is worn out. Need to know where to send it to be relined.
Thanks

Never found anybody who would reline a centerfire rifle above 32-40/25-35 level of pressure.

New barrel, or maybe rebore to 270 Savage is probably best bet.

Might even be able to find a 300 Savage barrel for it and get it to work.

The OP probably needs to know some smithing will be involved with most cartridge swaps that may include some hard to find parts and some experimenting.

At this stage he is not interested in a cartridge change.

250 barrels are somewhat hard to get ahold of loose of the gun. There is one for sale on a major website right now, but it's had a different front sight fitted and I believe it's $300+ as of right now.

Ouch. And if you do get a replacement barrel, might be effort and cost involved in getting it to index and headspace correctly.

Not saying it can't be done - it has been done a lot of times. We're just being honest.

My friend and I both have lathes and can headspace and index the barrel. I do have a 250-3000reamer also. At this time we are trying to keep the original barrel.

If you do find a gunsmith that will reline 250-3000 class barrels, please share with us. There'd probably be a good market for guys that would do 30-30 class.

Maybe rebore a .22HP barrel?

What serial range (production period) is the rifle..."Model 99, 250-3000"?

I will check with Kim after he rolls out of bed, whoops!! He is already headed out to an out of town gunshow.

Caught him in the truck going south. He will have to check it out when he gets back. All he remembered off hand was it had the early safety. Full story, my friend has it at another friend's shop.

That sounds like your best bet as, said above, relining a center fire barrel has never been offered as good advice. Maybe you should try posting your question on the gunsmithing forum and see what those guys have to say. To keep the gun in service I would seriously consider stepping it up to a 300 with a rebore or stepping up to the plate and buying another 250 barrel. Is the condition of the rest of the rifle good enough to merit doing this?

Rick, went to his shop and the serial number is 6869XX. It is clean, but well used. I doubt we can find a good period 250-3000 replacement barrel.
The 300 savage is a good suggestion or I can chamber a new barrel for him if that is his wishes.
Thanks for the help.

I have a decent .300 barrel if you decide to go that way. You might need a rotor change too.

I've often wondered if you really did need a rotor change. Need to grab a couple of my 250's and see how they load/feed 300's.

I believe you can also screw a solid frame barrel into a TD frame. So you do have options, especially if you don't worry too much abut being "period" correct.

From the SN provided, the gun is not a takedown.

There is a noticeable difference in the ,250 and .300 rotors. But, there's a good chance the .250 will pass .300 cartridges. I'd try it before swapping.

Serial, if on the bottom of the receiver, is 1953. Any of the pre-mill medium weight barrels should fit the forearm groove. A period .250 or .300 brl makes the most since. Going the .300 route it might be easier to sell the rifle and replace.

Big difference in cartridge guides too. They didn't do that as an academic exercise.
