For those of you that have dealt with Whittaker Guns; do they offer a discount to 24HCF members and do they usually have a sale between Christmas and New Years?
Isn't there a member here that works for the company?

Darrin, Derrick, something like that? If I knew his first name, I'd call the store.

Great folks, prices, and service in my experience. Bought rifles from them on 3 occasions, shipped from Kentucky to Oregon. Not sure about the sale schedule though. They pretty much have deals on something all the time, just depends what you're looking for. I wish they still had the deals on Tikkas....

They usually have an inventory reduction sale at year end for tax purposes.
Or maybe not much if I'm reading between the lines correctly.

I called Denzil and left a message. Hope to hear from him tomorrow.

Love the place, it's only a two-hour drive for me, and I make it fairly often. Beautiful drive down there, pretty country all along the way.
Closest I have gotten was almost getting sent to Owensboro for a load of whiskey but it got canceled. A few times I could have done it would have put me there on Sunday! Someday though. I hope to visit with Dirvik when I do....

2. No more discounts for anybody on here after this treatment.
3. I have a big loan to pay off. I bought into the business. I’m an equal partner.
4. You’ll see big changes to the website after January 1st. I’ll have the ability to offer special discount codes to certain customers.
I'll be anxious to see the changes. donsm70

Oh chit...... I think I blew my discount today by calling and asking for DooWop. However will I get my Red Ryder 200 shot carbine action BB gun (cheaply), this close to Christmas?

Did you order the one with the compass in the stock?
One of the things that would benefit guys on here would be a hidden sub-forum. Rick and I have discussed it in the past and it’ll be a topic again soon. I’m constantly fighting MAP policies and it’s not cost effective to add overhead to manage discounts on each of those policies. A hidden sub-forum would allow me to convey brand specific discounts and codes applying to those items. If I do it on an open forum, I get in trouble. If I do it somewhere that’s only available to invited members, now that’s a different story.
Personnel will be addressed soon too. I need to add some gun guys. I want people that can answer technical questions and show enthusiasm for firearms, handloading, etc. Our customer service has improved since the old days, but there is a huge opportunity to go to the next level.
I have lots of plans!
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

Would highly recommend a trip to Whittakers if you've never been there. It is a really cool place. It's about an hour from me, and I'm there several times a year. I've bought several guns from them over the years, and have always gotten a good deal. If any of you ever want to take a little road trip, go there, you won't be disappointed.
Whittaker's is an 8 hour, 400 mile round trip for me. Add a couple hours in the store, and a trip to Moonlight Barbeque , makes it an all day affair. I still try to get there in person at least twice a year. Have completed at least 6 transactions with them and feel that I was treated fairly in all of them.
One thing I like in particular with Whittaker's is the new store layout. Handguns down the middle. New long guns to the Left. Used long guns to the Right. And all of the long guns are out on racks where you can pick it up, handle it, check to see if it fits you. No taking a number. No asking permission.
Hope to swing through Whittaker's next week on our way to/from a duck hunt in Western KY.
Dexter came through, got an email from him last night! Old Doug is top-notch.

More abuse.....I'd expect this kind of abuse from other forum members, but you? Et tu Kingston?

I have not been in the store in many years but I counted up the stuff I got from Whittaker's and it is kind of scary. Hope to get by there next year. pavementends
No idea if Whittaker's pricing policy has changed now but back when Darrell Whittaker was still alive and running the store their prices on both new and used firearms were firm per as shown on price tags -- no dickering.
Also, no KY state sales tax was charged on used firearms back then, either.

He ruled the roost from his throne there in the front of the store. A no nonsense businessman, best way to be.

Many years ago I was at the shop one morning and Darrell's wife was the only one there minding the store. I mentioned to her that it wouldn't work for me to own a gun shop like theirs as I would probably be taking home more guns than I sold. She said a lot of people think Darrell does but they are so wrong. She then said most wouldn't believe it but he only actually owns one firearm of his very own, a handgun.. She said every once in a while they would get some guns in that he really liked and would put one under the counter saying he was going to keep it for himself but then wind up selling it to a customer. She said that year her and their kids got together and secretly bought him a new gun for either his birthday or Christmas he had been wanting because they knew he would never buy it for himself. That would make two guns that he actually owned. I told his wife he's a good businessman and the reason their business had been so successful and grown while so many others didn't make it
We still don’t haggle on prices. The stories above are nice, but if you knew the truth you’d laugh out loud! The sales tax thing was illegal, hence the change.
I always got along with Darrel. He’s how I got involved in the business. He was bed ridden during the last part of his life. I got a call one day asking me to come to his house. He asked if I’d be interested in running the business for him. He was stuck at home and they were having some issues. I told him I’d be very interested and that was the last time we spoke. He died several months later and I got a call from his wife asking if I was still interested. I was....
It’s worked out well. Becky and I are now partners in the business. She’s also moved on with her life and doing well. She’s still in the shop quite a bit, but is starting to travel more. She deserves it.

As I am sure you know full well, running a business like that is like a marriage. You are married to the store. Glad to hear that Becky is beginning to be able to travel and move on. That is a blessing. So glad that you are doing well with Whittaker's. Kentucky needs a gunshop like that.

So are you saying that Darrell really owned more personal firearms than what his wife told me? (Also, that was back around the early to mid '90s when she told me that, too, and they were still operating out of their original old converted garage store building, albeit after a floor space expansion or two).
I was in the last two versions of the old building. Two observations from my first trip to Whittakers:
1) On arrival, and parking infront of the store, my first thought was "This can NOT be the largest stocking firearms dealer in the State of KY." After entering the store, it was like one of this movies were suddenly everything opens up. 2) The bulk density of firearms to floor area in the old building was "impressive".

First time for me was back when Whittaker's was still in their original building, which was just a typical residential detached garage converted into a sort of 'general outdoor store'. Back then Darrell basically sold live bait along with a little of this and that but mostly fishing/hunting related stuff, and had just a very few simple racks of used guns. We'd stop there and buy live bait sometimes when we were taking our son fishing for catfish at the Diamond Lake pay lakes right up the road past Whittaker's. The big surprise for me came at their growth, which seemed to really start to happen by leaps and bounds after they changed to stocking firearms/shooting related products exclusively and pretty much dropped everything else. Even before they built the first new building the weekend crowds would often be practically elbow to elbow easily rivaling some of the gun shows I've been to. Whittaker's also had more worth the time to look at and at better prices than most gun shows, too.
Well, the "Larry, Darrel and Darell" joke sure took an interesting and unforeseen twist there now didn't it? And yes, it was extremely funny for those of us in the know.

You have to be of a certain age group, which I am, to understand that one.
