My pickup rifle is a 72 model 1895 I’ve had since late ‘seventies. I cut the barrel down years ago and put a 4 x Leupold on it since it has no front sight.

I’m thinking that after all these years of bolt actions, I’d like to have an open sighted or receiver sighted pickup rifle. Once I had cataract surgery, I can see sights o k again.

I want to be able to shoot cast bullets so no Microgroove rifling will be considered. Beat up and pitted is preferred as long as the bore is o k and it cycles correctly.

Anybody got one to sell?

.....and no debate please about shooting cast in MG barrels. I’m sure your bullets shoot great in your rifle if you say so but my 45 70 won’t.

Everyone should own at least one 30 30. Check out the Marlinowners forum and good luck in your search.

Curdog, have you looked at the XS sights? They are pretty nice with a Ghost ring on the back, (one version has wings to protect it) and a kind of post front sight with a white line that is pretty visible. That's what I have on my 1895 and love it. Check it out. Also try out Wild West Guns, they have shops in Anchorage and Las Vegas. I suspect they would have sights for you. You can also check out Marble sights, they should have something for you.

Mossberg 464s are a virtual clone of the Winchester 94AE.

The 464 MarineKote Brush Gun carbines with the laminated stocks and 16" barrels would seem, at least in concept, like a nice truck gun.

Whazzamatter, you don't like Winchesters?

On the 50 yard line with Lyman 311041 bullets doing preliminary load workup.

Actually a USRAC production I bought new in '84. 94 Trapper with a pad added to adjust LOP. The receiver sight is too kind to old eyes perhaps.

Back on the 50 with J-bullets

If you want a cheap Winchester 94 in 30-30, the Scheels store in Omaha has one for around $350 in their used rifle rack. 402-289-5666.

It has some "character" a little surface rust on the receiver and barrel and most of the bluing is missing on about 6" of the end of the magazine tube.

Check Walmart for a 336. Should be a fair price on ammo too. Pick up milk and cookies on your way out. It is a wonderful country.

Mossberg model 464 is a very good carbine featuring angle-eject just like the Winchesters of latter years. No micro-groove rifling.

I’m obliged for all the purchasing suggestions but you can see that I bought one the day after I made my OP.

As far as a Winchester, I bought one in mid sixties and it wouldn’t feed properly. Soured me on anything Winchester when the Dealer wouldn’t fix it.

I hope you like it Gene. To me it comes down to open vs. scope. Open = Win, Scope = Marlin. I've got a mid-fifties Winchester and a Marlin with a cheap Tasco 3x9 with see-through mounts. Both are fine. I'd take either deer hunting today.

The mid 60's were the absolute worst 94's ever made. I currently have examples from 1949 and 1979 and have owned several more from the mid 70's to early 90's with never a problem.

That one I bought would not chamber a second round unless you lowered the rifle to waist level and turned it on its side. The dealer thought that was alright. He allowed me 55 bucks trade in value the day after I gave him 65 for it. I chose a Savage 222 and it was a hell of a shooter. I killed quite a few deer and varmints with it.
