LGS got a Single Six in today. New Model blued (pre warning).
Somebody asked about the holster.....shop was gonna send the gun back to Ruger. Asked about it.......said make me an offer, so I did.
Not great but not horrible.........looking for a kinda sorta beater trapline rig. This only has .22 mag cylinder.
Hammer would not stay fwd. Hmmmm. Popped grips off and somebody had a home made pin stuck in the mainspring strut. Hammer and punch got that out. Hammer works like it should.
Cylinder free spins.
Tore it all apart...........latch spring is mangled, no plunger. Also pawl plunger and spring were in backwards.....so need a new spring there too (also mangled).
While not a smoking deal, I'll have it cleaned up and running for under $175. Perfect to toss in the truck console.
Wish I was running a trap line again.
Ideally get a Bearcat w adj sights, but they're pricey. This was pretty cheap IMHO.

Good deal, I love project guns.

I think the 22 mags are more fun to shoot out of a single action than the 22LR.
But that's just me.
You got a good deal there.

A buddy and me were talking about these and other SA pistols that have the 22/22Mag cylinders and we were discussing whether you could pick up an additional cylinder or a replacement for the often misplaced cylinders for these and would they fit? Do you think these were individually fitted to these pistols or would a gun show purchased (as example) cylinder fit without fitting, headspacing, or????? I see these all the time at gun shows for very attractive prices but it seems they are almost always missing one of the cylinders. These would make a perfect carry pistol for grouse, squirrels, rabbits, etc.. while out cruising in the woods. I've found most of them that I've shot to be very accurate.

I heard the cylinders were fitted.....but what does that really mean? That they had a couple types and you just got A B or C? Or were they really tweaked per gun?
My first handgun was a Single Six .22 mag old model, pops got it for me (Xmas I think) and I was in 5th grade. A couple yrs later he got a .22 lr cylinder, in red cloth bag.....at a gunshow. It fit great.
Dunno if we got lucky with that or what.
It shot best w the mag cylinder though, was usable w the .22 lr But like Kenlguy said.................the mags are way more fun (little fireball in 5.5" bbl).
Now my old model............it was not a convertible, was sold as .22 mag only. Fixed sight. Pops later got a .22 lr flat gate lightweight...........that was kinda cool.
Ideally a 6" .22/22 mag stainless.............perfect "do all". But for the $ I said what the heck.
If I don't like it at least I won't lose money for once.

Hookeye: Wow good for you on the acquisition and the done and to do fixes! That indeed will be a great and versatile take along gun. I enjoy my Ruger Single Sixes a lot - I only rarely shoot my 22 Magnums anymore though - they do "bark", which you probably already know. Enjoy and I hope the upcoming repair gets it done. Lot of times, a 22 LR or 22 mag cylinder from another Single-Six will drop right in.
I had one, that my late Brother bought a spare cylinder for at a gun show, that wouldn't fit.
I used a whetstone on the back of the cylinder, and took off metal two thousands at a time until it would fit and function.
Gotta keep things square, and measure with dial calipers often.

Virgil B. Probably not a problem since they are probably produced on CNC equipment but I would wonder about the timing, alignment, "headspace", lockup, and other considerations if using a cylinder that wasn't supplied with the pistol. Which is of course, why I asked.... Seems like the consensus is that they will usually work fine? Bob

I bought a mag cylinder from a member here a couple years ago. Dropped it right in to my single six and haven't taken it out yet except to clean

Well, the hammer plunger was busted too, so got a new one. They run long and not much good info on the web. Compared mine to a pic of complete hammer on web, w same pin location. Settled on a starting dim. Tried it a little long just in case, and it was. Hit the dim I thought it would be and it was perfect.

Gonna sound odd, I found a cylinder in the glove box of my truck 4 years ago. I texted Seller immediately and he had no idea what it went to. Another Friend thought single six and appears to be rimfire. No idea if it is or if it’s a 22 Lr even but send me a length measurement and I can verify. It’s got some surface rust but free is ok for price. I’ve been meaning to recycle it but hadn’t gotten around to it.
