I was perusing some sites rereading interesting Winchester history when it dawned on me that I've never seen any reference to an early Winchester lever gun in 22LR other than the 1873. I am curious why Winchester never brought out (until much later in the 9422), a 22 scaled lever gun to compete with Marlin's 1891/92/97/39.
Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

The Winchester M1885 is a single shot, lever action rifle chambered for the 22LR....

Thanks. I am aware of the 1885 but was referring to a repeating lever gun scaled to the 22LR like the Marlins. I perhaps should have been more specific. My apologies.

My guess is cost to produce...and mor about margin...they would be competing with themselves also...they had a great line of 22 rf in the 1890 and 1906. Several bolt actions and the model 63 semi auto...then if you had some big bucks you could have a 52

I can see that for the most part but it seems like they might have wanted to round out the 22 line with a lever gun and cut into Marlin's lever gun share of the market. They did have some great, non lever 22's though.

I'm sure that discussion occurred more than once at Winchester. Too bad we don't know what was said. It would be nice to have something like a 92, in 22LR with a 16 inch barrel. I'd probably have to have a couple of them!

I have often wondered why Winchester never made the Model 94 in 35REM

One thing though. When they finally got around to the 9422 they sure built a hella fine rifle!

They made a longer barreled one with pistol grip reminiscent of the M64 that was very nice. One with a tang peep. Sweet!
