Scouting was also a part of my young life. This id my 10th birthday party and the ONLY party I ever had until my 60th one that my lovely wife threw for me.

I thought so too but many communities have found a way around that, I’ll just leave it there.

I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with our local troop. My oldest son made Eagle Scout this week at 15 years old. My younger son is 11 and is currently Second Class rank. I intend to stick with the program until he gets his Eagle if he wants it and is willing to put in the work.

I'm not happy with the decisions the national council has made the last few years, but the truth is that's the political reality we currently live in. They're trying to do what they have to do to survive and not be sued out of existence. The truth of the matter is though that the decisions national makes don't have that much effect on the local troops. Our local troop doesn't have a single homosexual leader. We don't have a single child molester in the troop. We have 60 good boys in the troop who we're doing our level best to mold into good men. We do manly things - we rock climb, we cave, we camp, we whitewater raft, we shoot, and we backpack. We complain about the things we don't like, but drive on and try to make a difference in these boys lives.

If you want BSA to continue to remain a great influence in young men's lives, quit bitching and get involved. Volunteer with a local troop and make a difference at the local level.

That's all great, jds, but my local troop decided to bring girls in because one actively involved father wants his daughter to be a fake man.
There's no getting around it, anyone who objects is labeled a "hater". As far as I'm concerned, [bleep] them & the horse they rode in on.

all this is a lot of the reason why trump got elected. People like us got tired of being told our daughters need to share restrooms with perverts. No other organization prepared young men for adulthood like scouting. its needed now more than ever.

This.

The scouts were a big part of my life when I was a kid.

My kid isn't in scouts. We're a very rural family and I'll teach him almost everything he can learn there without the long trip to town. There is definitely a place for scouts and I support the club but.... Teaching boys (and girls) how to do stuff for yourself is not what the powers-to-be want things. Who of them in their right mind would want to train a kid to be ok on their own in a bad situation? They need people to depend on the government. The scouts are getting shut down to maintain a rank of people who depend on the government.

I was never a scout but had friends who were. Congrats to those of you who who learned the ropes.

The irony is if the BSA had stuck to their guns they would have emerged on the other side maybe poorer but leaner and stronger than before. IIRC the Explorer Posts have been admitting girls for some time, but Explorers are a whole different ball game.

Count me in as one of those who had some great outdoor experiences with the Boy Scouts.

Many years ago, I hired some new folks where I was working. I never let a Boy Scout get by me that had an Eagle Award. All of them had proven worth. Things may be different today.

The things that come to those that wait may be the things left by those who got there first.

Boy Scouts were organized to keep boys out of trouble once America became more urban do to the industrialization of America at the beginning of the 20th century. When young men were working on farms and ranches they didn’t have time to get into trouble, move them to the city and things changed.

Scouting was a good activity for decades as it was all about getting boys in touch with the outdoors. As time changed it became more and more PC even before PC was fashionable. 2018 is a time of sexual confusion and the scouts followed the current acceptable model of deviancy.

Too bad, because many men became better people through scouting, but I always felt it was a program that put men and their boys in activities that they should already be involved with...

When the BSA chose to hide the files of all those that had sexually abused young boys they sealed their fate.
Most of the documented cases occurred in the 60's, 70's and 80's, long prior to recent changes in their rules.

Here is a link to what is driving them into bankruptcy.

Boy Scout ‘perversion files’

Boy Scout of America files on 1,247 volunteers expelled from about 1965 to 1985 because they were suspected of abusing children.

so with all that said, lets ad in people who are sexual deviants and force the organization to take them in, makes lots of sense.

JDS44 said it very well. I have been a leader for 22 years. My Troop has never had a leader involved in a molestation case. We have had a few Scouts over 67 years that turned out to be homosexual but they didn't appear that way while in Scouts. They didn't try anything with other boys. If they had, they probably would have gotten the $hit beat out of them. As far as girls coming into Scouts, they are not going to be in the same units as the boys. A charter organization can start a separate troop for girls. It might share the committee with the boys but must have it's own Scoutmaster and Assistants. My Troop serves an urban area and without Boy Scouts many of our members would not be introduced to outdoor recreational activities. Many of the fathers of these boys have white collar jobs and never had experience in the outdoors. In my troop, the leadership has decided to continue to give the best program that we can give. All boys are expected to meet the standards that our Troop has used for the past 67 years.

I loved the Boy Scouts! Some of my best childhood memories was when I was in the Scouts. It’s amazing of how much I learned way back then that I still have in my memory bank. DIY hunting trips in the Rockies are my grown up Scouting trips. I’m sick to my stomach at what is going on with the Scouts today.

There was no funny business going on with Scout troop I was in. Never heard of such thing until recent years. Our Scoutmasters were very respectful and honest. We were expected to be the same. I would see our old leaders many years later in life and they would always speak with you and have laughs about us when we were kids.
