I think they were blanks. Will have to google it some. seems shot would be hard on valves, or maybe it goes to a "starter motor". Beats barring the flywheel.

The Germans also used this method of starting in either the Messerschmitt Bf-109 or the Focke-Wulf Fw-190. Can't remember which at this moment.

It was a shotgun "type" of shell; basically a blank that forced the piston to start moving. You can see the process better in some other vids.
