I'm thinking about buying this Ruger #1 in 35 Whelen that my son saw at a local gun show about a month ago. The guy is checking to see if he still has it. They want $950.00 for it and my son says the wood is beautiful. It would be my first #1 and my first 35 Whelen. I don't reload, so I'm trying to figure out what kind of factory ammo to shoot. I like Barnes TTSX in other rifles, so I was thinking about 200gr. in this. For now, it would be on whitetails, but in the future, who knows. What say you? Mine is accurate and puts animals on the ground quickly usually where they are standing when I shot. It doesn't bloodshot the front end of the deer or hog like smaller faster bullets do. I use it where the range is appropriate but have killed a deer with it at 325 yds that someone else crippled. I have several other rifles that I use but the whelen if my favorite.

Called him in to about 30-35 yards. The way he was coming I 'm pretty sure I could have waited and he would have been in my lap. My 35 hasn't gotten a lot of use in recent years since I built my 400 Whelen. This year I hunted with a different rifle every day since I was day hunting from home. It happened to be 35 Whelen day. I love my 400 Whelen but I could be happy if the 35 Whelen was my only big game rifle. Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.
