2019 will see a slew of rifles chambered for the .300 PRC (30/375 Ruger). Given that the 30/375 Winchester and the 30/8mm Remington Magnum and the 30/378 Weatherby among others have been around for a while, will this caliber be as successful as they hope (6.5 CM)? I love my .300 Winchesters. Is the .300 PRC smoke and mirrors or the REAL DEAL?

Wouldn't it be the same as a 300 WSM and 300 SAUM?

I think they are trying to create a buzz that will match the 6.5 CM in terms of Hornady ammo sales, etc. What has my attention is that it will come out in the Bergara Premiere series rifles among others.....I am LUSTING for an HMR PRO in .30 caliber (never a .308)

Did the military just pick it up for certain applications like sniping. That usually makes cartridges last.

Yup. Part of the "marketing" is DOD approval and they are branding it a "poor man's" .338 Lapua with similar ballistics and a lot less recoil.

I love my .300 Winchesters. Is the .300 PRC smoke and mirrors or the REAL DEAL? .........................Well I would not trade or sell my 300 Win (if I owned one) to get into this new round...........Doing a google search, I came across a video by Hornady with Joe Thielen entitled,,,,,, "Hornady 300 PRC-Ultimate 30 Caliber." 35 seconds or so into that video it shows a 300 PRC and the 375 Ruger side by side. To my eyes and even though the case shapes are nearly identical, the 375 Ruger has a larger diameter case body from the shoulder going down. It appears that while they say the 300 PRC is a 375 Ruger case necked down to a 30 cal, is it really? Not exactly to me. Am I missing something here?.....................Based on a 375 Ruger is one thing (which the 300 PRC certainly is). But still, the 375 Ruger case body appears a little larger in diameter.

I love my .300 Winchesters...they have been good to me since 1967! My bottom line is functional performance superiority or equality. Is it truly a poor man's improved .308 Norma or a .338 Lapua ballistically with a lot less kick? I will keep an open mind and sort the HYPE from the ACTUALITY when and if I get one.

Hornady may be hyping the 300 PRC a little by calling it "The Ultimate 30 Caliber" which was within the title of that video. Who put that in the title? I have no idea.
If you are a fan of beltless cases and like something new to play with, then the 300 PRC will do the trick.
Ballistically, it is not the ultimate 30 cal. It might be 3rd or 4th in line behind the 30-378 Bee, the 300 RUM and maybe the 300 Bee too. We'll see after the ballistic #s come out.

It will never match the popularity of the 6.5 Creedmoor. It can't. It's a .300 Magnum and cartridges that big are simply not needed to kill game in North America, or anywhere else, for that matter. The Creed is proving this to shooters and hunter which, ironically, will dull sales of the .300 PRC.
There will still be the penis-envy crowd who has to have a .300 Mag because, "The .270 Win is too small for elk!" and because, "Only a girl shoots a .243 Win!" But after the dudes who are compensating for lack of .... er ... "length" are done buying it, it will settle in well somewhere below the .300 Win Mag in sales and maybe around or slightly above the .300 WSM.
Hard to beat the .300 Win Mag, as it has been proving itself for many years and this new .300 PRC really doesn't offer anything different like the 6.5 Creedmoor does other than maybe seating longer bullets easier, but US hunters like the 180gr in .30 cal, so it won't much matter.
As a sniper rifle, the .300 PRC is the schitt, though. Great round that certainly has a place.

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

I'm sure it's got it's place in the cutting edge of sniper gear, but it's probably not your average Joe deal. 6.5 CM certainly takes the cake for an all arounder in the "new and improved department"
243 and 270 suit my needs just fine, but it's interesting to see things get pushed.
