I like them all and can't decide. The Hagn is a little pricey for me as is the Dakota 10. So what other options are out there and how do they rank? This rifle if it happens will probably be chambered in 257 Weatherby so not traditional if that helps. Is an imported High Wall suitable for the Weatherby?

I may just end up getting a Whittaker Ruger if I can find one I like at a price I like.

What would you like to end up with? Are you doing the work for having a smith do it? I think the Ruger actions are just dandy. I like the action strength combined with the safety, and they look pretty good. I think you'd be money ahead to use a Ruger as a donor. Another plus is consistency manufacturing quality and they're easy to find.

I'm working on a Ruger No. 3 in 9.3x62 right now. Mostly it's a fun project for me which will end up in a rifle I've been planning for a long time. There's some work I can't do on it, but I'm doing all I can because it's fun and saves me money.

Lots of Rugers out there to diddle with, and triggers and safety options too.

One mod I've seen that's attractive is removing that little quarter-round piece at the front of the receiver, making it a straight vertical.

One reason I'm so fond of the Browning 1885s is that they are usually very nice to begin with, about as nice as I'm comfortable with taking afield. The Sharps rifles like the one Shrap's been posting on are truly works of art, but I'm not sure I'll live long enough to get one built (like I've got the bucks for THAT!).

From what liitle I've seen in print on the subject, I'd be leery of the imports for a hot one like the .257 Wby. Pretty sure you could pick up a "beater" Miroku just as cheap or cheaper. Certainly I'd ask the manufacturer about the suitability befire buying one as a donor.

To me the No. 3 would make the best action to start with. Simply I like the lever and no lock up better than the No. 1. The 1885 is also worth a good look.

Ruger no. 3 sounds good. Few options for the high wall in aftermarket components. I am in no hurry so will be checking for used Rugers but if I happen on a B-78 so be it.

Side lever cocks it. Bottom lever breaks it open.

I used a #1 as a platform for a build and couldn't be happier with the results. You'll like the 257 WBY mine is a MKV Ultralight and I don't go west with out it.

A Ballard ought to hold that .257 Weatherby right well.

For real. For some reason I thought the Ballard was not as strong as the other farky type actions.

I have 4 Ruger # 1`s with custom barrels 1- 300 win mag, 1-220 swift, 2-257 Weatherby Mags ,Ruger # 1`s work great for custom single shots and are a very strong action. one of my 257 Weatherby Mags has a picatinny rail with Nightforce rings and a Nightforce scope ,all these custom # 1`s shoot very well, I did have custom s.s. barrels built by Brux barrel company too.

The sky is the limit on customizing Ruger N0.1 & 3's.

I really like single shots in big game calibers. Presently I'm restocking a Ruger No. 3, and changing the lever profile to sweep along the grip. I'm leaving it in 30-40 Krag, which seems to be available at a discount because a lot of shooters consider it antiquated. Anything but! In this action it can be handloaded to equal the .308 Win.

I prefer a 7X57R over the Krag, but most rimmed cartridges are so cool in a single or a double.

I was looking at Hagn in the past, Hall F was a nice action.

Are Kepplingers discontinued?

The No1 and No3 are the same action, just a different lever.
