I’m looking at a S&B Summit 2.5-10x40 which has the A4 and A7 reticle. Does anybody know the subtensions between the thin crosshairs down to the start of the thick vertical duplex of each model?

I’m looking to replace a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8. On my current rifle, I’m sighted in at 200 yds, and it’s also on at 300 where the thin duplex transitions to the thick duplex. It’s an easy way for me to get to 300 without having to have a cluttered reticle. Not sure if which S&B reticle would be better.

Which would you say is more similar to the horizontal spacing of the duplex in the Leupold VX3? A4 or A7?

Do not have a clue similarity to VX-3 but have a couple A-7s and have always thought it is S&Bs best for Elk sized beasts. They also seem to fetch more on resell. A7 very sweet!

The Summit is a SFP scope.
The subtensions will change as the power ring is turned..

10-4, so is the VX3. I put them at max power when shooting 300 and use the junction between thick/thin post as my aiming reference.

Seems like the Leupold duplex may be between the A4 and A7

Thick bar high: 1"
Thin bar high .25"
Center 36"

Guess on A4 would be 25" center, maybe .40 on the crosshair and maybe 3.5 on the heavy bar. Guessing. If you find out on the A4, please post. Sometime they will send you a great data sheet emailed on the subtensions via a web page request...sometimes they don't...:)

This is a little bit older, but you can find subtensions of most S&B hunting reticles in the link below. I've had the A7, A8, A4, A9, P3, and FD4. Compared to a lot of manufactures, S&B has many good hunting reticles that are bold enough to find in low light. I think the quality of the glass helps as well but even with the wider heavy post spacing on the A7 and A8 they are still very visible in low light.

Between the A4 and the A7, the A7 will be best for all around hunting. The A4 is great for low light, the need to get on target quick and dangerous game.

I have both, A4 is for closer quarters woods/brush style hunting in low light and Africa. A7 for everything else.

I have recently bought one with the A9 reticle, it will be my go to reticle for any hunting afoot replacing the A4.

I just got the opportunity to look at the Summit's A4 second plane reticle

Some gack:

The center does look to be about 25." For comparison, the Swaro 3.5-10x42 2cd plane center is ~14", and the now discontinued Zeiss #4 2cd plane was ~ 17" (high power)

The crosshairs themselves looks to subtend the same as the A7, A8, A9 at .25" --not nearly a heavy as S&B FFP versions.

The heavy posts of the reticle look more like the heavy posts in the Swaro 2cd plane Z3 scopes...2" area maybe? Both considerably lighter than the Zeiss #4's and the S&B's FFP.

To me, the Summit's 2cd plane version of the A4 looks to be an excellent all around type reticle for a set and forget type scope. Not a dedicated low light reticle.
