We try to eat a big salad once or twice a week for dinner. Nothing else. All of the greens, reds and spinach. Tomatoes, cukes, bell peppers and avocado. She tosses nuts on her's, I throw a can of Costco albacore on mine. Olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt and pepper and we are chowing. We will also make a dinner of an artichoke a piece.

I'm making this tomorrow Wabbie....a nice warm vegetable soup shouldn't be too fattening.
Course I'll have a big hunk of bread with it but you don't have to.

All of the good salad fixings with a liberal amount of oil and vinegar dressing and salted and peppered to your taste. No fatty or fried meat or bread on the salads. Broiled lean steak or chicken if you want. Hard boiled egg works good too. Wash it down with iced tea or coffee straight. I lost 80 lbs once with this and 40 lbs another time. Now I don't have a weight problem. I could lose 10 lbs a week. Don't even think about a beer!

I love salads. What I don't love are the constant warnings about the ecoli outbreaks that result from bad lettuce. We buy the low fat dressings, and try to go easy on them. As far as toppings go, I'll admit that bacon is one of my favorites, but once again, I try not to overdo it. Tomatoes this time of the year usually taste pretty bland.

As all said above, however, we only make homemade dressings.

As to additives, texture is key, we add hemp hearts, soft boiled egg, smoked salmon, small amount of crumbled feta, sometimes olives.

Farm fresh in summer is the best. Store bought a distant second for the other 8 months.

If trying to lose (loose for the campfire literati) weight, don’t use bottled dressings - too much sugar!

Health professionals are coming around to the fact that fats are not as bad for us as has been promoted.
Sugar is the killa.

For me Italian seasoned croutons make a big difference between satisfying or not. And garlic in the dressing. Not a lot of croutons but a guy needs a few calories after all. Use them wisely, grasshopper.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm,... healthy. Sounds good. I should do the same more often. Head of lettuce lasts me 'n' muttly forever so I buy bagged salad. Not so good at times depending on the store I'm shopping. frown

If you want to kick it into turbo, replace the potato with broccoli, cauliflower, or brussel sprouts and follow that one large meal with a 14 hour fast.

Jam that meal with as much fat as you want, but avoid carbs, sugars, fruit, grains, and root vegetables.

Include whatever veggies you like, the dressing is the key when trying to lose weight. I used balsamic vinagrette with the lowest calorie that I cold find, use only as much as the label says is one serving. Mix it up as to the other additives if you plan to eat a salad frequently, italian croutons are good, sesame seeds, feta cheese, diced walnuts or other nuts are some of my favorites.
