reading about the new 224 Valkyrie round...

it got me thinking about playing with my Ruger with a PacNor 1 in 7 twist, stainless barrel...

the barrel was originally put on a Ruger in 223 by me...

but someone wanted the Ruger 223 real bad so I sold it, and put back the factory barrel...
which was a high miler...

guy who wanted it was a gunsmith and wanted to set the barrel back and rechamber to a 222...

so I put the barrel on a Stainless 77 SA, and had Kevin Wyatt chamber it in 22.250...

the Valkyrie claims it can keep a 90 grain Sierra Supersonic out to 1300 yds..

makes me wonder about what the 22.250 would do with 80 grain match bullets out to 1300 yds...

its pretty accurate with Hornady 75 grain BTHPs....

and also thought about trying some of the 75 grain ELD-Ms I picked up that a one in 9 twist 223,
throws all over the place at 50 yds...

I have a 22-250AI that my pet load for it is a Berger 80gr VLD at 3408fps, my drop chart says it is supersonic out to a mile.

The problem with 22cal bullets is spotting your shots at that distance, if you are shooting at a gong or targets at that range is one thing but shooting at rock chucks or other critters past 1000yards it is difficult to spot your missed shots. that is where shooting a 6,6.5,30cal or 338 is a much better choice. For example 2 months ago I was shooting at a pair of cougars at 1400yards, my spotter could not spot a single miss. if I would have been shooting my 338Lapua AI my chances of wacking them both would have been greatly increased

1400 yards on cougars with an 80 berger?

Would really be fun to see.

75/80 ELD would do you better for spotting misses.

I don't own one but will be rebarreling one to an 8-twist some time this winter.

75 ELDs and RL17 is going to get the first go. Slick feeding & plenty of breathing room in OEM mag box confines will both be good things.

Not sure what to expect for speeds but as long as the sweet spot lands above 3250 fps I'll be a happy camper.

Mohawk wearing an 8 twist .22-250 Shilen barrel.

It loves 75 and 80 gr. bullets, has aftermarket aluminum bottom metal, Timney trigger.

A very handy, half inch gun.

In the 1-8 Ruger American I got from Whittaker Guns, the 70-grain Hornady GMX groups around .6 inch at 3400 fps with a max load Superformance powder. Got a very nice pronghorn buck in October at 350 yards, easily done because when sighted-in 2" high at 100 the POI is only slightly low at 350.

Could have dialed for longer ranges with the scope on the rifle, but couldn't even get a clear shot until within 350 due to the terrain. My wife and I use monolithics on antelope a lot due to less meat damage, since there ain't much meat even on a big buck. The GMX worked fine in all respects.

Dunno what we'll try next year. Eileen has a 1-8 twist Tikka T3X, also a limited run from Whittaker Guns, but did not draw an antelope tag. She will next year, thanks to bonus points, and early indications is that it may shoot even better than the RAR.

I've begun some load work up using 62 grain TTSX and CFE223 powder. I hope to get it out Wednesday to test it.

Your load (I think) of 33.3gr R15 behind 75gr Amaxes gave the below 5 shot group at 710 yards and also put a little cull buck down in its tracks at 410 yards. I have a box of 80s but haven’t tried them yet. I first tried 4350 and 414 but didn’t get nearly as good results with them.

Its in 2 1-8 220 Weatherbys....that stay a lot more accurate without cleanings after I ditched using 17 in both. One tube really needed it to the point I thought the throat was going.

The 22-250 I cant imagine would like 4451 any less and getting the most out of both cases for velocity with 75 pluses needs 4350 thereabouts for burn rate.

Not yet. Will let you know after trying some 70-grain AccuBonds, plus more powders.

My 1:8 Tikka likes the 75gr ELD-M pushed by H414. I still want to try RL15, and the 70gr NABs are the end goal.

RL16 and 75 ELDs for me. Not quite kissing mine @ 2.650" COAL. Case fill seems about ideal, not compressed but it's nearly full. Upon further testing, 37.0 Grains shoots best(sub 1/2 min) and has me at 3,300 fps at the muzzle. 37.2 & 37.5 grain charge weights opened up to MOA.

Work up and don't take my chrono data as gospel. I verified the 3,300 fps at a distance of 615 yards. It was money at that range.

Singles through my Chrono:
34.0--3030
34.5--3044
35.0--3122
35.5--3144
36.0--3159
36.5--3205
37.0--3292
37.5--3308
38.0--3367--noticed slightly heavier bolt lift.

90% Sure the latest Hornady book has 75/80 gr data, just not with the powders I wanted to use. It was a start though.....
