Hi Jack!

I got this new bag of 50 from a local gun nut who I met through a forum here in Canada. Couldn't find any other Canadian sources. As prm says, Starline is available. There's a Canadian source for that, too (but at a rather ridiculous price). When these 50 get tired I will likely just try resizing some .308 brass, although there's a huge local gun show in April and I'll see if there's any available there, as well.

Grabbed a pound of 8208XBR and some Fed210 from a local supplier yesterday.

338 Fed dies aren't easy to find in Canada... maybe there will be some at the gun show...

The LGS told me Federal were no longer selling 338 Fed cases as a component. No doubt they can't be bothered ordering them in. If I want correctly head-stamped cases I've had to buy expensive premium 210 Nosler Partition factory loads. I've found that simply necking-up .308 brass has its draw-backs since drawing some of the shoulder brass up into the neck forms a "doughnut". Not such a problem when loading my preferred flat-based 200g Woodleighs that don't seat that deep, but could cause concern with 210 Scirroco or SST's.
PRM , have you used the Starline brass?

Jack

I know you didn't ask me, but I thought you would be interested to know that Starline has distributors down under. https://www.starlinebrass.com/order-online/international-distributers.cfm

I have not used the brass myself but I have only read good things about it. As good or better than the usual suspects.

No worries, mate!

Good news for me! I found another supplier for the Starline brass. https://www.rustywood.ca/shop/starline-brass-cases/

Not a "terrible" price at $52 CAD for 50 units. Heck, I paid nearly that for the bag of Federal.

To me the Federal and Starline are essentially equals. Neither is fantastic, yet they are perfectly workable. I measured a couple of each the other day and there was a .5-1.0gn difference with the federal holding more.

This seems to be the consensus.

I figure the four-legged creatures where I live won't be able to tell the difference. I'm not out to win any competitions, just fill the freezer.

I expect delivery of a 338 Fed today and I am very excited. 200gr Woodleighs on the way. Got some new 338 Federal brass. Just need some dies and powder. Thanks to this thread I'll be picking up some TAC and/or 8208XBR.

It might be a while, but I'll be back to report on load results.

Just shot some 200 Woodleighs today with 47gn of 8208. Shot well at 2.73”. 2655 FPS. That’d be a great elk load.

prm,
I'm sure you won't be disappointed with terminal performance of that load. It tallys well with what I'm getting with 46.5 grains of the same powder, of around 2600 f/s at the muzzle of a 22" bbl.( Yours is 23", is it not?). How does it group? It will perform well on your WT and MDeer as well.

Jack, yes it's a 23" barrel. I had been fighting some accuracy issues with the rifle in general but today it all seemed to work well. This particular load was .9". I'd want to shoot it more to be more definitive but it's a good start.

180 AB - 46.5 Benchmark - BR2 - 2.78” (2775 FPS, .4" finally a load with Accubonds that's reliably shooting well)
160 TTSX - 48.5 H322 - BR2 - 2.80” (2965, .8" including one shot I pulled. Guy next to me shooting something bigger with a muzzle break...)
200 Woodleigh - 47 8208 - 210M - 2.735” (2654, .9")

For those of you who have used the 185TTSX on game, what's the lowest velocity that you've experienced adequate expansion?

Hoping to get back to NF for moose this year or next and want to use this bullet in my .338-06.

Thanks!

You are shooting a 22" barrel, right?

Just trying to anticipate what velocity I can expect from 24".

Mine is a 23" Pac Nor barrel. Primers are nice and round, no other indicators. The Hodgdon book load for a 200gn Hornady is 47 and 2657 with a 24" barrel so I think I'm in the ballpark pressure-wise. I chose to stop at 47 based on the book load.

Wise. I'll likely work up from 45 to 47 and stop there. 2700 would be nice, but chasing FPS can be a fool's game. I'm hoping for MOA, but we'll see...

Speer lists 46.4gr 8208 as max for the 200gr Hot-Cor @ 2630fps, BTW.

A lot of damn good info in here.

Is anyone loading for an AR10?

I have a DPMS .338.
Should be 20" 1 in 10.

Looking for a good load to hunt that wont be too long for the mag etc.

New gun for me, Fed Fusion 185 factories didnt seem happy in it for the previous owner.

OK, so here is a question for you 338 Fed owners. Not sure if this is the right place to ask it, but with such a big group of knowledgeable people in this thread I figured "what the heck".

I ordered both the RCBS full length die set and the separate RCBS neck sizer die, however I received the neck sizer set instead of just the neck sizer die.

So now I have two bullet seater dies (one from each set), but oddly, they are numbered differently. One of them is #14 (which came with the #14 full length sizer) and the other is #18 (which came with the #17 neck sizer).

Anyone know if there is any difference between the #14 and #18 bullet seaters ?

I have no idea. I have one and it’s labeled 14. Send a note to RCBS I guess.

Those federal fusion 0.338 200 gr have a good BC. Wonder how they shoot and work on elk?

If a C&C Speer Hot Cor works well on elk, I’d have to think the Fusion would do fine.

I’d like to see results of Litz evaluating the 200AB. His results for the 180 AB are better than what Nosler publishes.
