So I took home a 512 today. Pulled it apart to find zero powder residue, etc. Anywhere inside the barrel, feed mechanism or bolt. No sign that it ever been shot. Didn't expect that - who doesn't shoot their new Remington...?
Anyway, the trigger breaks clean but its a little tough. Heavy-ish spring and a little too much sear engagement if I had to guess.
I know that they're economy triggers but I'm wondering what can be done to improve them. This is a nice rifle - I wouldn't mind putting a little.money into it if there's a smith who truly knows his way around them.
Anyone have any tips?
Thanks!

My first rifle, 1955, a 511 that once I put a B4 Weaver on it killed a lot of tree squirrels with head shots. I never gave the trigger much thought as I hadn't used anything else to compare it to and was used to it. About ten years ago I got another 511 and realized there are better triggers. I took it to a couple of older gunsmiths that are considered competent. I don't know if they're the last word on Remington 5-teen triggers but both said pretty much the same thing. They're good rifles but there's not much that can be done with the trigger.

I have two 581's that Brian Voelker worked his magic on, but I don't think he's doing them anymore.

A good gunsmith should be able to take the creep and roughness out of the trigger. Due to its design it is difficult to get a light trigger pull with them but cleaned up they can be surprisingly good although a bit heavy.
I shot a 513 Matchmaster for gallery competition for quite a few years and always managed to be competitive with the" cleaned up" factory trigger.
The 581 mentioned above is a completely different rifle with a completely different trigger from the 5-teens.

Thanks guys!
But it may be a lost cause - I think ill be selling it as is because I think I'd like one of the new CZ 457 MTR's and I'm gonna sell a few things to fund it. I figure its best if I don't let myself get attached to this one.

I have a Rem 510 single shot. The trigger was heavy when I got the rifle so I did the following. I removed the trigger spring and cut a couple of coils off of it checking the pull weight as I went. I did a good clean and lube job on the entire action also. My pull weight is now at a measured 3 1/2 pounds. The break is somewhat crisp. That rifle is my go to 22 LR G-hog rifle. Many critters have fallen to its report.

Without doing anything else, a small dab of white lithium grease does wonders on a CLEAN sear.

DannoBoone Des the lithium grease perform better than graphite or moly based greases?
